Jean Huets is co-author, with tarot authority Stuart R. Kaplan, of The Encyclopedia of Tarot, four volumes that cover centuries of tarot production and imagery. Good Deck!

I really hunted hard for a deck that had similarities to the Rider-Waite deck but had more bold and beautiful artwork, and was easy to hold (have small hands) I have found this deck to be all those things. The only gripe I have is that he made the Prince and Princess of each suit in place of the Ace and Page of each suit like the Rider Waite does, but at least no other cards were added, just a name change there. I'm glad because some decks completely add in their own (Like the one I have were they changed "The Devil" to be "Materialism") my personal preference was to leave that alone, especially the major arcana. Anyhow, this deck is amazing and it's a fine choice. The artwork is absolutely stunning :)

Simply Beautiful

Preferences for Tarot decks are very subjective, so I don't know exactly what to say to encourage this one. I will say that I like the Rider-Waite deck, but wanted something a bit more creative without being too crazy. This deck is that--creative, but not crazy. Some say that the characters are certain people like Tom Cruise, etc. I didn't recognize anyone and have avoided reading anything that tells me which cards are "supposed" to be whom. It's speculation, and I doubt it is true. The cards are rich in symbolism, exquisitely drawn, and very thought provoking. You may go through a lot of decks before you find "your" deck. Looking at this one would not be a waste of time. I have seen A LOT of cards and spent A LOT of money. This deck is unique, grounded in reality, but definitely metaphysical. The pictures make sense. I had never grasped a meaning before without looking at a book...

An essential challenge

I would recommend this book for anyone concerned about the problems of public, institutionalized education. It raises important challenges, the kind that are hidden in plain sight and often go unaddressed. As someone who survived K-Bacchelaureate with straight A's and psychological scars, only to learn too late that the words "Summa Cum Laude" on my degree were my reward in full, I find that many of Gatto's charges against institutional schools ring utterly true. Such schools teach their structure more than any content, and that that structure's facetious fragmentation of time and content, its pigeonholing of students by age, its usurpation of all personal privacy and dignity, and its very compulsory nature are actively hostile to the humanity and self-sufficiency we should want for students.

To me, however, Gatto's proposed solutions become problematic. His prescription is for true communities of a kind that perhaps no one I know---not even my parents and grandparents---can actually reconcile with the environment they grew up in. One friend in particular was disturbed by his proposed solutions because she was the child of a poor, single, and rather dysfunctional mother who was not well-equipped to facilitate her education without the availability of some kind of public school. Any solution to the school problem must address such situations, rather than simply trusting that all families and all communities will be functional and will meet children's needs if left to themselves.

Chapter 5, "The Congregational Principle," which focuses on proposed solutions, disturbs me most. Gatto vacillates from praising Socrates' condemnation of the Sophists for taking money to teach to espousing unleashing pure market forces on education. His exalted example is colonial New England towns that were able to achieve "true communities" through the option of excluding or oppressing undesirables. His point that these communities eventually corrected themselves from within without coercion (and the backlash it produces) is well taken, but as a liberal, I think it irresponsible to respond to the injustices of race, gender, and class by just leaving communities to their own prejudices and trusting that they'll be better a century after my death than they are now. Such triumphs of justice as Black Emancipation, Women's Suffrage, and the Civil Rights Act are, in my view, worth the fight, even if they did trump the judgement of some communities, and I don't follow Gatto's logic that immediately equates such nationwide achievements with nationally centralized school curricula that result in lifeless and mechanical schooling.

Perhaps my single biggest problem with this book is the lack of citations. I'm not prepared to take some of the author's scientific and historical assertions at face value---like a literacy rate of 98% in Massachusetts before compulsory schooling began, or the assertion that teaching the basic "three R's" takes only 100 hours with a motivated student---and feel that these need citations to investigate or confirm for myself.

Despite its problems, however, I would still call the book a "must read" for anyone with an interest in the issue. Gatto's criticisms of our schools' basic paradigm are ones we cannot afford to ignore, and although his proposed solutions may be flawed, we benefit from listening and weighing what he has to say.

In Dumbing Us Down, Mr. Gatto gives his first person perspective on the tragic waste of human potential induced by coerced 12-year confinement of the young to the artificial and anesthetizing environment of the classroom. The book is both enlightening and frightening. Personally, I felt a sense of vindication while reading the book. It put into words my negative feelings about education resulting from my unsuccessful 15 year struggle to encourage my own children to love learning. Mr. Gatto's writing has encouraged me to think that perhaps it was a GOOD thing that school was not able to press them into its mold! At the same time, I found it immensely disturbing that a brilliant, dedicated and award-winning teacher found it impossible to convince his own colleagues that grading, grouping, numbering and force-feeding irrelevant facts to captive children has no correlation to true learning, and does, in fact, suppress any natural curiosity they may have once had. I would like to recommend the book Deschooling Society by Ivan Illich for those interested in looking at the larger social implications of compulsory schooling. If I had it to do over? This book puts into words the reasons for the slow disintegration of Western civilization. That the compulsory school system cannot be reformed, because it is working exactly as intended, producing a society of permanent children, dependent, compliant, and apathetic, is brilliantly exposed.

If you have Half Life 2, you should have this guide

This is a great guide. It is over 300 pages thick with detailed information about every location. It covers Half Life 2 as well as Counter Strike - Source. The entire guide is in full color and printed on heavy paper.

In addition to explaining gameplay details, the guide also covers some basic information that would normally be in a manual. Since HL2 does not come with a manual, this is very nice. It is not something I would normally expect from a strategy guide, but I appreciate that they went the extra mile there.

This is also the kind of game that makes a strategy guide important. HL2 is not a mindless shooter, so you are likely to get stuck at some point. This guide is a great tool and will help you out when you need it.

Note that this guide is not the same is the "Official Hint Book" that ships with the collector's edition. In fact, the booklet that ships with the collector's edition is really just an advertisement for this book. Get the real thing and ignore the collector's edition.

Extremely Helpful Guide

Had I not purchased this along with my copy of The Orange Box, I would be in the same dilemma as every single one of my friends is: confounded by the maze-like levels, and frustrated at my inability to solve what eventually turns out to be a simple puzzle. This book helped to pull me out of mental ruts where I simply had no idea how to move on, especially in Portal. The guide doesn't spoon-feed you everything however, it leaves the lucky jumps and guesses to you, and thus I have yet to defeat the third to last level of portal. Overall, it is a fantastic guide, and along with the helpful walkthroughs are well-written descriptions of the characters and enemies in each game.

This is the sampling text that I have been waiting for; it is the book I wish I could have written. There has been a real need for a text that covers theoretical material at this level and also includes real applications and modern topics in sampling, such as the model-based approach . . . Very readable.

"The writing style is excellent . . . The informal style is a definite plus . . . The exercises are good. They don't seem to be aimed at doing 'stuff' but more at understanding."

About the Author
Sharon Lohr (Ph.D. in statistics, University of Wisconsin-Madison) is the Thompson Industries Dean's Distinguished Professor of Statistics at Arizona State University, where she has taught since 1990. Dr. Lohr's research focuses on survey sampling, design of experiments, and applications of statistics to social sciences and education. She has published numerous articles in journals including The Annals of Statistics, Journal of the American Statistical Association, Journal of the Royal Statistical Society, Biometrika, Journal of Quantitative Criminology, Wisconsin Law Review, and The American Statistician. She has served as chair of the Survey Research Methods Section of the American Statistical Association, president of the Arizona Chapter of the American Statistical Association, Fellow of the American Statistical Association, Elected Member of the International Statistical Institute, and member of the Census Advisory Committee of Professional Associations and the Statistics Canada Advisory Board on Statistical Methodology. In 2003 she received the inaugural Gertrude M. Cox Award from the Washington Statistical Society and in 2009 was selected to present the Morris Hansen Lecture.

nice introduction to survey sampling

For me the classic book on survey sampling is Cochran's. The second edition of Cochran was published in 1977 and there have been many advances since including the use of superpopulation models. Lohr provides the basic concepts first followed with many exercises at the end of the chapters. It is designed for a first course which could be taken by statistics majors or undergraduates in fields that use survey sampling such as business, sociology, psychology or biology. Many real surveys are presented and the standard topics (e.g. stratified and cluster sampling) are covered. Issues of nonresponse are also discussed. Chapter 12 covers topics not commonly seen in survey sampling texts including two-phase sampling and capture-recapture analysis. Warner's method of randomized response to deal with sensitive questionnaires is also covered in Chapter 12. It is also unusual in that it provides a great deal of coverage of resampling methods to estimate variance components including the bootstrap, jackknife and balanced repeated replicates. It also deals with regression and logistic regression in problems involving complex survey data. Missing data issues are also discussed as are imputation methods The book contains a many references to the literature and also includes a CD ROM with some data sets and a software program called SURVEY.

excellent sampling textbook

this is an excellent book on sampling. it accommadates all reader levels (undergrad, graduate, practioner and theorist). i can't comment too much about the theoretical aspects of the book because that is not my focus. but for those who want to learn about sampling and use it for their jobs or school projects, i cannot think of a better text. i find myself referring to the text constantly. her examples are relatively clear and easy to follow, in my opinion. she covers cluster sampling and complex surveys (variance calculations) in depth and with great clarity.

A well-written guide to sampling design and analysis.

Sharon Lohr does a great job of covering the subject of sampling, which seems to be overlooked in most curricula even though the need for it is ubiquitous across disciplines. This text is appropriate at an intermediate level such as third or fourth year undergraduate or first-year graduate study. The math notation appears to be an attempt to bridge between the notation used at the introductory level and that which appears in graduate texts such as Greene. It provides the odd-numbered problems' solutions, which is awesome, except that many of them are incorrect. Have you ever tried to teach yourself calculus? Try teaching yourself while the solutions to the problems you're using to practice on are incorrect.
