Good but could be better
By D. Greenberg
I found this guide very useful when I was cruising in Buzzard's Bay and Vineyard Sound. While the guide doesn't contain phone numbers or radio channels for the harbormasters, paired with a smart phone you can get most of the info you need. It would be nice if it contained this info as the most recent popular cruising guide for the area was last published around the late 1990s I believe. The visual guides are useful, and the channel markers are helpfully superimposed on the pictures so that you can clearly see where they are located in relation to land. It would be nice also if the anchorages were also marked on the photos so one could gauge their position in relation to the visual markers (obviously mooring fields are easily visible; anchorages less so).

The Temptation of St. Anthony, by Gustave Flaubert

Flaubert's story is based on the legends surrounding the monastic hermit St. Anthony (who lived during the second half of the third century AD) and the various temptations that he faced. The story is written in a prose-play form the reader has the "scenes" described at length, before the prose dialogue hits like a thunderclap. In the opening scene there is a very detailed picture of the desolate desert and in Saint Anthony's opening "monologue" some of the disaffection that will serve as the conduit by which the various temptations sent by Satan shall reach him during the course of the night to follow. Later in the story, Anthony goes into his hut and reads passages of how the Most High exalted his believers upon even the most puissant of monarchs. Stories of how the faithful overcame great obstacles and temptations, from avarice to lust to hubris to each of the other Seven Capital Sins. As Saint Anthony falls asleep, Satan himself materializes out of the desert air and his devils begin a bit of mischief that leads to Anthony awakening and being confronted first by the lust-filled "Queen of Sheba," whom he can barely resist. Next, Satan assumes the form of a fellow hermit, Saint Hilarion, in order to tempt Anthony to committing the grave sin of heresy. And so it continues, each temptation building upon each other, Saint Anthony assailed more and more with each sharp thrust. The scenes continue to be highly charged and imaginative in how these temptations are portrayed in both symbolic and literal forms. By the end of the book, Saint Anthony is brought to the cusp of collapsing into concupiscence, only to be granted a last minute reprieve...perhaps.

The Really Unreadable Flaubert
By reading man
SALAMMBO was declared unreadable by Cyril Connolly, but I think TENTATION has it beat by a long shot.

The fruit of Flaubert's early romantic obsession and, even more clearly, his masochistic side, I don't see how any English reader could take this seriously as literature, though as a self-revealing document it's interesting.

I wonder why Penguin decided to publish this translation by a woman with a Russian name (don't have the text in front of me, her first name is Kitty) instead of at least assigning the job to Baldick, Tannock, Kreilewhatshisname, their regular cadre of French translators. I expect they thought it wasn't worth the cost when Kitty had already done the job and the book would only appeal to Flaubert completists.

avoid the kindle translation
By J. Paul
I am a big fan of the work itself, but wanted to throw in a recommendation for the Penguin Classics edition. By all means, avoid the Kindle translation, as it is crazy bad. Certain passages read strangely while a majority of them are just wrong. I'm no scholar; I just bought both versions and it's remarkable how much better the Penguin Classics edition is. This is a shame, but as the kindle is very convenient. However, the poetry and energy of Flaubert's writing comes through much better in the other translations. Trust me; you'll be glad you paid more for the print copy.

A Metatext
By Bruce Kendall
This is a work that should not be neglected by those interested in Flaubert or by lovers of French Literature. It's format resembles an old-fashioned cyclorama, which was basically a revolving canvas, portraying various interpretive images to an audience that would be seated in the middle of a room. Or it may recall the same period's "magic lantern" which would produce a similar effect, projecting a series of images on a flat wall, the precursor of modern cinema.
Flaubert ushered in an entirely new sensibility to the world of letters. He reinvented the concept of the literary artist as word-and world shaper. The word is the world and vice-versa. No writer ever engaged in such a Herculean struggle to shape every word, every sentence, every image, every assonance or consonance to perfectly conform to his intention.
Flaubert engaged in a kind of ascetisism his entire adult life, which is hardly news, but is central to an understanding of this work and to his attraction towards St. Anthony for a protagonist. Flaubert was for many years a kind of hermit in his study at Croisset, where he retired to his study to read books and write novels. He had contact with his mother and adopted niece and wrote letters to a mistress (Louise Collet, and later to George Sand) along with a few male friends. He would make brief sojourns into Paris, but for the most part, stayed to himself in his provincial hideaway. What he dreamt of there, besides his most famous works (Madame Bovary and L'Education Sentimentale) were reveries such as this novel and Salammbo, another book set in the Near-East and equally evocative in terms of his treatment of that region's sensual and Byzantine richness.
"The Temptation" sparkles with some of Flaubert's most carefully and lovingly constructed imagery. It is the author's own homage to the fertility of his imagination. He never fathered a child literally that we know of, but this work and Salammbo were his ways of saying that he was fertile in all other respects. Each passing personage or creature is a seed sewn by this father of imagery.
One of the most senseless and ill-informed utterances in the annals of criticism is Proust's comment that Flaubert never created one memorable metaphor. Flaubert's entire cannon is one vast metaphor. They are evident in every sentence and every passage of every novel he ever wrote. This is particularly true in this work, as any informed reader will no doubt conclude after reading it.
One other area of recommendation extends to students of Gnosticism. Flaubert encapsulates much of the central theories of the early Gnostic Fathers and Apostles in a few well-delineated characterisations and brush strokes. I would also recommend the Penguin edition, edited and translated by Kitty Mrosovsky, for her introduction and notes. The only drawback I have with her is that she portrays Henry James as denigrating Flaubert's work, where in fact he generally effusively praises it. To those who can read it in its original text, I can only say I envy you and wish I were there.

Sovereignty: God, State, and Self (Gifford Lectures), by Jean Bethke Elshtain

Throughout the history of human intellectual endeavor, sovereignty has cut across the diverse realms of theology, political thought, and psychology. From earliest Christian worship to the revolutionary ideas of Thomas Jefferson and Karl Marx, the debates about sovereignty—complete independence and self-government—have dominated our history.

In this seminal work of political history and political theory, leading scholar and public intellectual Jean Bethke Elshtain examines the origins and meanings of “sovereignty” as it relates to all the ways we attempt to explain our world: God, state, and self. Examining the early modern ideas of God which formed the basis for the modern sovereign state, Elshtain carries her research from theology and philosophy into psychology, showing that political theories of state sovereignty fuel contemporary understandings of sovereignty of the self. As the basis of sovereign power shifts from God, to the state, to the self, Elshtain uncovers startling realities often hidden from view. Her thesis consists in nothing less than a thorough-going rethinking of our intellectual history through its keystone concept.

The culmination of over thirty years of critically applauded work in feminism, international relations, political thought, and religion, Sovereignty opens new ground for our understanding of our own culture, its past, present, and future.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Dismissed by most political theorists as a mere encumbrance, theology serves Elshtain well in this historical analysis of the two incarnations of sovereignty that have forged the modern world: the nation-state and the individual self. Originally delivered as the Gifford Lectures of 2005–06, Elshtain’s insightful investigation explains how political thinkers such as Machiavelli and Hobbes first endowed the nation-state with absolute sovereignty over society by politicizing the innovative theology of nominalist philosophers such as William of Ockham, who elevated God’s sovereign will above His discernible reason. Readers thus confront the perilous political dynamics in a nation-state as powerful and as capricious as Ockham’s God. Elshtain traces the lethal consequences of this modern theopolitics in the bloody atrocities of the French Revolutionaries, the Nazis, and the Soviet Communists. Inevitably, the deified modern state fractured into millions of divinized modern selves, each intent on establishing and defending its own godlike sovereignty. Champions of modern selfhood celebrate the unprecedented autonomy of the liberated individual; Elshtain, however, warns that a self that claims its godhood by severing restraints imposed by ancestors, religious orthodoxy, and community will ultimately destroy the cultural ecology necessary to a meaningful life. An illuminating though sobering new perspective on the conjunction between religion and politics. --Bryce Christensen

Worth the Effort
By G. D. Geiss
This work will be valuable if you have any desire to understand (if I may paraphrase a Jamesian title) the varieties of sovereign experience. Tracing the origins of sovereignty back to the "birth", if you will, of the nation-state in the late Middle Ages, Professor Elshtain aptly demonstrates how misguided it is to lable this period "The Dark Ages". In as much as this time was (as she puts it) "God drenched", with its unquestioned interweaving of the religious and the political on a much broader framework than prevails today in the form of the decaying Holy Roman Empire and the Catholic Papacy at the head of a "world-wide" Christian community, all such tracing must begin with theological notions of Divine Sovereignty.

Interestingly, one finds here diversity of opinion and approach, not the staid uniformity that is often the harbinger of current views on this Age generally and Catholic theology specifically. Initially there arose an image of God as a "bound" (the author's word) sovereign. Mighty? Yes, but operating only within the "bounds" of His own Creation, thus avoiding arbitrariness and allowing access by our limited human intelligence and understanding. This is a view of Divine Sovereignty that the author ascribes to the works and thoughts of St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas. [As a personal aside, I am not sure how our educational system can claim "educated" graduates while avoiding (as I believe it does) virtually all confrontation of these two towering intellects.] As I understand it, this is a sovereign concept based on authority, legitimized and in fact delimited by Creation itself. It is a sovereignty of mutuality and reason and of "natural" law decernible by and accessable to all- believers and unbelievers alike. Thus, even if one denies a Creator and ascribes the universe to some great accident precipitating the big bang, one could still appreciate the balance and mutuality of a sovereignty of this sort as applied to the "state".

This, of course, is a far cry from where we are (mostly) today. This book traces from theorist and thinker to theorist and thinker the shift from this "bound" version of sovereignty to one of will, arbitrary and unfettered; a sovereignty of power writ absolute, able to undo all or any part of creation at any time- to run time backwards, remake lost virginity, anything at all by simply willing it so. Such power is likely accessible only by "revelation", not by reason. As the vision of God's sovereignty morphed, so too that of the state until we arrived at the absolute monarch and his collectivist successors: the French Revolution's Committee of Public Safety, Communism, and National Socialism. It is a fascinating ride- rather like watching a (very) slow motion train wreck.

One of the things I think could have been done better (or perhaps just more completely) was to explain the necessity of the conclusion that God's sovereignty was "unbound" will that is ascribed to nominalism generally and Thomas Ockham specifically. I don't think it's entirely clear why the fragmenting, abstract denying nominalist ideas necessarilly lead to absolute Divine Will as that seems, in some ways anyway, more abstract than the "bound" authority version. I see the revelatory argument, but am not (probably due to my own ignorance) sure that it's a necessary part of the nominalist credo.

As she moves into more modern times, Professor Elshtain has, in my view, more difficulty in assessing the limited and/or shared soverignty concepts of the English system or American Constitutionalism. Again, I'm not so sure she's adequately assessed the theoretical foundation of current democratic sovereignty as it relates to legitimacy, authority, and interlocking webs of rights AND duties held jointly and severally at the individual and local levels. Still, she asks (rightfully) some tough questions about the source of those "rights and duties", suggesting that issues of morality, will, power, and "natural" law must still arise and that failure to deal satisfactorilly with them by acknowledging the interlocking, mutually dependant and arising moral claims can lead down frightening roads indeed.

As she progresses into a discussion of "self sovereignty", I must confess a certain reservation and even antipathy toward Professor Elshtain's less than even-handed accounts of folks like Descarte, Emerson, and Neitzche. I confess that the last of these is versus my own idiosyncratic reading of the mercurial, probably lunatic level genius of Herr Neitzche who's refusal to be clear when he could, instead, be dramatic or literarily entertaining as well as his dogmatic insistence on inconsistency allows considerable variation in assessments. Still, her's is one of the most sensationalized and essentially propagandistic readings I've seen put forward by an otherwise seemingly sensible observer. I don't know if this can be explained as her reaction to Neitzche's vitrolic (he's seldom anything else) condemnation of Christianity and the Christian God, but it seems so unbalanced as to warrant skepticism about any conclusions she draws concerning his views on the self as sovereign, a position to which, as a dyed in the wool determinist, I'm not sure he would actually admit.

Concerning such theories of self sovereignty as Professor Elshtain discusses, one can only say, that regardless of whether you accept the Augustinian view of the "Fall" from grace and Eden as their origin, still, humans are limited creatures. We are very finite beings with finite life-spans, finite brains (which evolved in finite survival modes), finite imaginations, and finite capacities to understand ourselves and each other. The abrogation of the moral obligation to recognize this and account for it in our actions, our organizations, and our lives generally is unsupportable. Actions based on that abrogation represent a tendency toward usurpations of authority that can never be ligitimized and attempts to do so need, by all who recognize in the universe something greater than ourselves, a whole greater than the mere sum of its parts, to be resisited.

You may not enjoy all of this book, but the account it renders of its main topic and the questions raised thereby should be carefully considered by all with a claim to a humanist bone in their body, whether religiously mediated or not. It's worth the effort.

Broad Subject, Narrow Book
By William Rhea
Applause to Jean Belthke Elshtain for taking on such a wide-ranging, cross-disciplinary topic and in the midst of it rewriting the story of political thought. One can see all the threads from her previous works coming together in this book, from war to feminism, theology to the private/public dichotomy. This was a book that needed to be written.

Her arguments are largely cogent, and offhand I cannot think of a one with which I can terribly disagree. For a work of nonfiction, the imagery is well-constructed- not surprisingly so, for her love of literature shows frequently in these pages. Consider these lines on the French Revolution: "One might say that the sovereigntism of Rousseau, with its sacralization of politics, demands human sacrifice. If ancient peoples sacrificed goats, the French Revoution sacrificed humans to propitiate the revolutionary gods" (137). Her appeal to the Augustinian tradition of personalism is, in my estimate, the best course for countering the autonomous individualism rampant in even the best of modern thinkers.

What the book lacks, unfortunately, is sufficient length. Another reviewer commented that Elshtain does not sufficiently explain the connection between late medieval nominalism and the supremacy of will within the Godhead. For the record, the connections comes about because as nominalism rejected metaphysical realism and essentialism as the twin bases for grounding the common reality of imminent realities, ideas of absolute (inherent) justice tended to collapse. At the same time, the Trinity- a single essence or being or substance existing as three persons- shifted away from that traditional definition, wherein the persons of the Trinity were less hypostatic identities manifesting a single substance (the nominalist: what substance?) than three manifestations of one entity. The inherent nature of justice vanished from the late medieval mind precisely when the plurality and personhood of the Godhead lost its former vigor- thus the monistic, willing sovereign God of Duns Scotus, William of Ockham, and eventually Luther and Calvin.

Alas, this connection is assumed on the part of the reader. Indeed, the whole debate surrounding the problem of universals that lies at the root of the realist-nominalist split goes without naray a mention; and conceptionalism, a third solution to the problem pioneered by Peter Abelard and back in force (in a way) with Immanuel Kant (hardly an insignificant aspect of his transcendent self Elshtain derides) isn't referenced at all. This is but one example. Personally, I found the whole section on divine sovereignty poorly explained and all-too-brief. And while I have no complaints on the factuality or clarity of the chapters on political sovereignty, I found these too brief as well and severely lacking in the non-intellectual history surrounding the rise of political sovereignty. The Peace of Westphalia is mentioned on but two pages.

As a typographical note, the author should fire her editor. The book is riddled with typos- hardly a page went buy without finding one. Moreover, sentences are poorly constructed with alarming frequency- dangling modifier here, split infinitives there, run-on sentences on the one hand and sentence-fragments on the other. I had to read several passages three times over, so much so that it took me a full week to read it cover to cover- something that should not have taken so long in a book concerning which I have complained of insufferable briefness.

That said, these negatives are warnings for the reader, not discouragements. The absence of medieval political thought in the modern teaching of the field is a great loss, and Jean Elshtain has done us all a great service with its publication. Thread of sovereignty as a holistic concept running from William of Ockham to Thomas Hobbes to Immanuel Kant- a thread, more amazingly, that runs the same course from theology through politics through anthropology- can no longer be ignored with the publication of this important book.

Historical Sites of Sovereignty
By A Certain Bibliophile
The idea of sovereignty, like almost any other politically or culturally meaningful term, was not born in a vacuum, remaining unchanged through the centuries. In many ways, Elshtain's "Sovereignty" is a history of this complicated idea from its deeply religious and theological associations in Augustine and Aquinas to what she refers to as a "monist," psychologized sovereignty of the self that holds the most sway in our fractured modernity. As the title of the book indicates, Elshtain discusses sovereignty at what she perceives to be the three critical junctures of its development, with the sovereignty of the self being a product, or so she seems to think, of Enlightenment's secular humanism.

In the first part of the book, Elshtain sees an important shift from Thomistic conceptions of sovereignty, which emphasize God's love and rationality and especially the ability of the human being to use her intellect to deduce these things about God, toward the nominalism of William of Ockham. She associates Ockham's nominalism with a prevailing trend toward voluntarism, which shifts the focus away from God's love and rationality toward the omnipotent, volitional will. While theology was the locus classicus of this paradigmatic shift, it eventually spills over into the political realm wherein there is a consolidation of power into a single body (either the Pope or the prince), as opposed to the idea of the Gelasian Two Swords doctrine (as articulated by Pope Gelasius in a 494 letter titled "Deo sunt" to Emperor Anastasius I). Elshtain's intellectual genealogy is right to see in this historical moment both the origins of the all-powerful secular prince and those of the archetypical medieval Pope, one of whose missions was to purposively blur the lines between the political and spiritual realms.

The second part of the book gives several adumbrations of thinkers Elshtain associates with the view that the rightful place of sovereignty is in the state, including Hobbes, Hegel, Schmitt, and Machiavelli. Elshtain explains how these thinkers, along with Martin Luther whose fear of civil disorder and unruliness lead him to give increasing numbers of powers to the king, built the theoretical absolutism which James I and Louis XIV used as justification for their reigns. While the author limns the origins of shifts in the idea of sovereignty, she never locates a "cause" or a rationale; she points to Hegel and shows (convincingly) that he places ultimate sovereignty in the state, and later says that movements such as radical feminism have even further atomized sovereignty, locating it at the site of the individual's body. But as a reader, I would have appreciated an investigation of the shifts themselves - of how one conception, over time, turned into the other.

While the first two-thirds of the book honed in tightly on the examination of carefully made arguments about ideas, the last part completely falls into politically conservative homiletic. Instead of following arguments, this part of the book blames everything from radical feminism to eugenics to cloning as being part of the irresponsible shift of sovereignty to the level of the human body. Elshtain sees these as breach of deeply Christian humanism which she seems to espouse in her admiration of Augustine and Aquinas. While one can easily agree or disagree with her opinion, it was ultimately the lack of a well-presented defense of God-centered sovereignty that made me think less of the book. Throughout the book, she also seemed to downplay or ignore the atrocities of our ventures in God-centered sovereignty (like the burning of heretics), doing the same for all of the progress made during post-Enlightenment modernity (like representative democracy and women's suffrage).

For those interested in more on the topic: Elshtain openly admits to not having a deep background in theology in the introduction to the book. Anyone looking for a correction in this should look to Quentin Skinner's much more theologically grounded and scholarly two-volume "The Foundations of Modern Political Thought," especially the second volume which focuses on fifteenth- and sixteenth-century political theory.

From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up–Recovered from the vampire attack that hospitalized her in the conclusion of Twilight (Little, Brown, 2005), Bella celebrates her birthday with her boyfriend Edward and his family, a unique clan of vampires that has sworn off human blood. But the celebration abruptly ends when the teen accidentally cuts her arm on broken glass. The sight and smell of her blood trickling away forces the Cullen family to retreat lest they be tempted to make a meal of her. After all is mended, Edward, realizing the danger that he and his family create for Bella, sees no option for her safety but to leave. Mourning his departure, she slips into a downward spiral of depression that penetrates and lingers over her every step. Vampire fans will appreciate the subsequently dour mood that permeates the novel, and it's not until Bella befriends Jacob, a sophomore from her school with a penchant for motorcycles, that both the pace and her disposition begin to take off. Their adventures are wild, dare-devilish, and teeter on the brink of romance, but memories of Edward pervade Bella's emotions, and soon their fun quickly morphs into danger, especially when she uncovers the true identities of Jacob and his pack of friends. Less streamlined than Twilight yet just as exciting, New Moon will more than feed the bloodthirsty hankerings of fans of the first volume and leave them breathless for the third.–Hillias J. From Booklist
Gr. 8-11. "Which is tempting you more, my blood or my body?" Things are heating up between Bella Swan and her vampire boyfriend, Edward Cullen, in this sequel to the immensely popular Twilight (2005). Then Bella is injured at her birthday party, and the Cullens' reaction to her blood sends Edward's family packing. Bella is inconsolable until she discovers that reckless behavior allows her to hear Edward's warning voice in her head. To keep him close, she decides to live as dangerously as possible, acquiring two motorcycles and developing a close friendship with Jacob, who helps her rebuild them. Romantics will miss Edward's presence, but the suspense created by a pack of werewolves bent on protecting Bella from a vindictive vampire will keep them occupied until the lovers can be reunited. The writing is a bit melodramatic, but readers won't care. Bella's dismay at being ordinary (after all, she's only human) will strike a chord even among girls who have no desire to be immortal, and like the vampires who watch Bella bleed with "fevered eyes," teens will relish this new adventure and hunger for more. Review
All is not well between demon-magnet Bella and Edward Cullen, her vampire Romeo. An innocent papercut at Edward's house puts Bella in grave danger when various members of the Cullen family can barely resist their hunger at the smell of blood. The Cullens promptly leave town, afraid of endangering Edward's beloved, and Bella sinks into an overwhelming depression. Months later, she finally emerges from her funk to rebuild her life, focusing on her friendship with besotted teen Jacob from the reservation. Bella's unhealthy enthrallment to Edward leads her into dangerous and self-destructive behavior despite her new friends, and supernatural complications are bound to reappear. Bella's being hunted by an evil vampire, and Jacob's adolescent male rage turns out to be incipient lycanthropy: It seems many Quileute Indians become werewolves in the presence of vampires, their natural enemies. Psychic miscommunications and angst-ridden dramatic gestures lead to an exciting page-turner of a conclusion drenched in the best of Gothic romantic excess. Despite Bella's flat and obsessive personality, this tale of tortured demon lovers entices. (Fantasy. 13-16) (Kirkus Reviews)

I now understand why Team Jacob vs. Team Edward came about.
By Trish (I read too much!)
New Moon picks up while Bella is well on her way to recovery from the events that ended Twilight, but after an accident that reminds everyone that, yes, Bella is human and, yes, Edward and his family are indeed vampires, Edward becomes more and more distracted by his concerns for her continued safety. When he decides that the only way to protect Bella is to remove himself from her life entirely, Bella suffers from a major breakdown.

The budding friendship between Bella and Jacob draws her out of a deep depression. Despite her lack of romantic interest in him, she leads him on, afraid of falling back into her slump. She tries to be honest and tell him that she's stuck on Edward, but can't help but tell him that she also wants him to keep trying. It's kind of a flaky, selfish thing to do, not exactly endearing. The whole thing left me feeling sorry for poor Jacob.

But despite all that, I felt myself mourning with her. It's easy to say that she shouldn't have fallen apart so much over a guy, but then again, she didn't just lose him, she lost a family and a new sister, Alice. To have so much, love, family, acceptance and perhaps even the promise of immortality, and then to lose all of it all at once, how could she not have fallen apart? Do I agree with how she deals with it? No. Do I empathize? Yes.

As for Jacob, we get to know him in this story, and he has to be one of the most interesting characters so far. With Edward out of the picture, it's difficult not to root for him. He's the ultimate good guy: kind, funny and supportive. He knows Bella is broken, but wants nothing more than to make her happy and perhaps find a place in her heart. And then there's the whole werewolf thing. Kind of hard to court a girl, especially one like Bella, when you keep turning into a wolf everytime you're angry or jealous. I think it's ironic that he, like Edward before him, believes the only safe option for Bella is to stay away. She just can't seem to catch a break.

Besides all the drama, there is a good deal of humor sprinkled through the story, and horror as well. The Volturi are creepy, the encounter with them terrifying. The whole scene kept me up way late. I probably shouldn't have tried to read that chapter right before bed, not good for your peace of mind.

Overall, I loved this book, love triangle and all. Jacob is really the star of this one, and I can totally get why some people would tend to take his side. Then again, it's hard to argue against Edward, flaws and all. He is obviously Bella's soul mate, whatever that's worth. No matter how good Jacob would be for Bella, her heart belongs to Edward, and honestly I don't think Bella's right for Jacob.

I'd recommend this book to those who like YA romance, particularly with love triangles, werewolves, and vampires. It compares pretty closely with the movie of the same name, which I must admit I watched first. I thought it was fantastic that the movie was able to so vividly bring the book to life, and so accurately, which I didn't realize until I finished reading New Moon.

Revived my excitement, but smelt like a wet dog in places.
By Casey Carlisle
Continuing with my journey to revisit the Twilight saga story again in graphic novel form, New Moon Part 1 gave me a lonely, fragile, yet funny version of Bella.

The illustrations were great, but lacked the climatic effect that the two Twilight volumes did. Most of the graphics were black and white with the exception of two or three short scenes. This volume lacked to capture the tone as effectively as I have come to expect. After Bella discovers Edward has left, I wanted to see her state of mind reflected more in the artwork, but this aspect of the story was glossed over. For something that impacted me so heavily in the novel and film versions, I was left feeling let down. The black and white drawn in grey shades, when I’d have liked it to be represented more visually desperate than a white-wash treatment.

With that said, I still liked the darkness – the more sinister aspects of the storyline: the wolves, Laurent, Victoria. While the movies only hinted at this, in the novel it was meant to make you feel uncomfortable, or in the least, shiver. The artwork here captures the impact more in the tone of the novel, and I enjoyed getting more tension for Bella than I had from the film franchise.

Though, my favourite pages from this volume would have to be the end pages, which I feel really captured the soul of the first half of New Moon – desolate, haunting and dark.

So while I appreciated the artwork, the story felt flat. Admittedly there was a lot of detail in there that I did not expect, but there was something about it that failed to punch in its weight class. Possibly because some of my expectations went unmet.

Really looking forward to Volume 2 later this year. And upon searching the internet, it doesn’t appear Young Kim is continuing with the series. Sad. I’d really like to see where her illustrations could have taken the saga.

"'Hahaha," she laughed.' Really? That is considered good writing?
By Esmund Kerr
Terribly written.
Misused semicolons, inappropriate and strange comma placing, contradictory verb tense agreement, dialogue worse than a B movie, absolutely no character depth, no character motivation, things happen for no reason, and the very worst is her prose. Sure, Twilight gets people reading so I'll praise Meyer for that, but she also may have just made an entire generation dumber.

Twelve Traits of the Best Brand Identity Firms

The choice for any client can be daunting. More than ever, there is a panoply of highly capable firms that specialize in brand identity. Which ones should companies trust to revitalize their brand? Whether the firms are global brand consultancies, multidisciplinary design offices, design boutiques, or specialists in areas such as packaging or interactivity, these core competencies hold true.

1. Strategic imagination. An ability to understand and align business goals with creative strategy and expression is critical.

2. Process focus. A disciplined process is used to foster collaboration, build trust, and ensure responsible decision-making and results.

3. Design excellence. Reducing a complex, meaningful idea to its visual essence requires skill, patience, and unending discipline, whether the endpoint is a symbol, a look and feel, or an integrated brand identity system.

4. Irrefutable logic. Creating a new system or brand architecture requires an ability to communicate a compelling case for change to any decision-maker, from the CEO to the director of marketing to a division head.

5. Alchemy. An ability to synthesize vast amounts of information and reduce it to a big idea. Also, an ability to cut through the clutter and see the “gold” in a marketing audit.

6. Empathy and insight. An ability to be collaborative and understand the perspectives of all stakeholders, to suspend judgment and transcend politics.

7. Flexibility and humor. An ability to keep an eye on the big picture despite constraints and challenges. A sense of humor always helps.

8. Mindfulness and curiosity. An awareness of what is going on in the wider world and insight into best practices and the branding landscape.

9. Tenacity. Boundless energy and the perseverance of a marathon runner are required to develop and refine key messages, new names, taglines, and branding guidelines.

10. Organization. Phase by phase, email by email, presentation by presentation, file by file, tracking and documentation are key.

11. Focus. First and foremost, the process must stay focused on the customer and their experience.

12. Passion. Passion fuels excellence and inspires brand engagement.

Close to outstanding
By The Tao of Netflix
Although I have extensive experience in trademark and intellectual property law, I lack a formal education in branding and its language; I turned to this book to fill in the gaps and help me understand how to lead a branding and visual identity campaign.

As stated, this book is very close to outstanding, but not necessarily outstanding. At 4/5 stars, I clearly very highly recommend it. However, my criticism stems from the book's failure to clearly define its terms. I understand that branding is, largely by definition, a more artful business tool, but there is a whole branding lexicon that is not well explained in the book. As you work your way through the book, you'll encounter repeated uses of the word, so you come to build your own definition, but I would have found it useful if terms would have been clearly defined at the outset, rather than mush-ily and circularly defined.

Despite this limitation, the book does a wonderful job of demonstrating the numerous layers of brand identity, and the processes associated with leading a branding campaign, be it key messages, visual identity or name. Wonderfully laid out steps with good examples. Keep in mind, however, this is more of a survey book, not necessarily a textbook intended to be comprehensive in itself. So while it brilliantly lays out the processes, you'll need to use other resources to fill out any gaps you might have.

Additionally, perhaps as you'd expect from a leading branding book, this book is beautifully laid out and shows a great appreciation for information design. Its a visual feast for the eyes that you'll enjoy perusing.

A Good Reminder & Model For Brand Design
By Z. J. Walker
I really liked the way the book is laid out, not cluttered with lots of graphic examples and side notes. The downside of the book is that, although it provides some great examples, notes and guidelines, it doesn't go into very much detail on any given part of the brand design process, even leaving out key definitions to parts that aren't self explanatory. Despite the fact that it doesn't provide this detail, it is laid out in a way that will give you ideas or reminders as you go about designing your brand identity. If anything it's a nice book to look at.

Self Branding Tremendous help
By MNRA
First of all: this book has the greatest page layout i have ever seen! It's a pleasure to read. Every comment on the side of the page makes you have the A-ha moment. Every diagram summarizes just the strictly necessary without skipping on details. It's very visual, structured, yet so creative and textbook-ish like. The perfect balance between core fundamentals and illustrative examples. I could not stop reading it. Loving it more and more. Every time I read it there is something new.

About the Author
Growing up as the daughter of piano teacher Gladys Smisor, Jane began her childhood lessons with Leota Anderson in Hutchinson, Kansas. After graduating from Barnard College of Columbia University, she continued her studies with Isabelle Vengerova in New York, and received a Master of Arts degree from Teachers College, Columbia University. Jane Smisor Bastien was formerly a pedagogy professor and director of the Preparatory Department of Music at Tulane University, where she had an opportunity to extensively research current methodology in developing the Bastien teaching materials for children.

Because she still teaches a large number of students in her home in La Jolla (San Diego), Jane's composing continues to be directly related to her own students' experiences. She knows what appeals to contemporary children and writes music that they will find fun to play. In recognition of their significant contribution to music and music education, Jane and her husband James Bastien were presented with the 1999 MTNA Lifetime Achievement Award.

Appropriate for a student.
By Kittehs!
I like that this book has real pieces written by well known composers instead of easy adaptions of things. Really great music. I use this book with many of my students. I have a 7 year old playing out of this and I also have a 14 year old playing out of this so it really depends on the kid as we teachers know. So I can't give you a clear age group this is appropriate for, but I can tell you that it is appropriate for someone on Piano Adventures level 3b or 4 (a great series of piano books).

Very Nice!
By Doxiegirl
I bought this for one of my piano students. I am happy to say that she loves all the songs in it. It is a perfect mix of intermediate classical songs that are just challenging enough for an intermediate piano student, yet are both beautiful & fun to play.

A must for the library
By Steffi
These are getting harder to find...a must to add to any piano library and do NOT let any teacher or student write in them and ruin them. Photo copy only!

This has become my Fishing Tackle "bible"
By A Customer
This is the second book I purchased when I started collecting fishing tackle. It is the most comprehensive book I have found yet and is filled with information on the history of the lures. I use it hand-in-hand with Fishing Lure Collectibles by Dudley Murphy and Rick Edmiston. I strongly recommend this book be added to your collection.

This giant volume (670 pages) will delight any lure and tackle fan. It contains over 2,000 photos with 32 pages (hundreds of items) in full color. Compiled by a real authority. This isn't just a picture/price guide, but it has much valuable and interesting information ranging from history, buying, selling and trading, displaying, organizations and manufacturers. Value ranges are shown. It covers reels, rods, lures, and more. Old ads and photos of packaging are shown. This paper back book weighs almost 4 pounds. It is the 5th (1999) edition of the publication.
