Leslie J. Franks, LMT, has practiced Asian bodywork since 1990. In 1995, she began studying Classical Chinese Medicine with Dr. Jeffrey C. Transformative Stones

If quartz crystals represent perfection in the world of minerals, the transformative stones demonstrate the process by which perfection is accomplished. In Western terminology, this large group of stones is called chalcedony. It includes agate, chalcedony, jasper, and onyx. The stones are fundamentally the same--that is, a fibrous subcategory of quartz, all with similar hardness and all with a chemical composition of silicon dioxide. For the ancient Chinese, however, who saw consciousness and spirit in the natural world, the patterns, colors, and configurations these stones presented were indications of a process of refinement and evolution.

Most of the transformative stones form at the Source/Yuan, or igneous level, but their appearance shows a process of metamorphosis. The stones are quartz, but they do not form perfect crystals. They demonstrate a slow evolutionary process as the Earth adapts to change. They also represent a core tension of human life--the relationship between Water, our Essence, and its requirement to discover and express our deepest self, and Earth, with its requirements of living in society. Looking at the agates, with their banded, speckled, or patchy appearances, we can imagine the struggles and conflicts the stones experience during their creation--as they melt and solidify, compress and release, fuse and separate. Eventually the stones refine to become the strong, definitive colors of the jaspers; the translucent, homogenous colors of the chalcedonies; or the shining, intensely black onyx, which represents our deepest Essence: the Water energy of the Kidneys. The group as a whole matures to its ultimate perfection in the subtlety and elegance of jade, a stone held in the highest regard since the earliest history of the Chinese.

The use of jade in Chinese culture dates to the Neolithic period, when ancient populations considered the nephrite jade they were able to mine locally to be inherently more valuable than gold or silver. They used the stone to shape ritual objects and tools, and the quality of the carving gives evidence to a highly sophisticated civilization. Nephrite jade is extremely durable, as demonstrated by the many jade artifacts unearthed that date back to more than 1,000 years before the Common Era.

In the nineteenth century, a beautiful jade from Burma became popular among the royalty and Confucian scholars. It had clearer and bolder colors than the indigenous nephrite jade, and the bright emerald-green color, called imperial green, was much sought after. This is jadeite. It has a different chemical composition than nephrite jade, but this difference was unknown until later in the century.

Jade is associated with the upper dan tian. We use agates, jasper, and chalcedony for treating illness, but jade is an aspirational stone. It represents the� possibility to ascend out of petty, selfish concerns and to exhibit qualities of behavior that benefit all humans.

A Masterful Work!

Leslie Franks has done a masterful job of organizing and presenting Master Jeffrey Yuen's view point of Chinese energetics - this is the book I have been wanting for at least ten years! Franks sums up nicely much precious information which I have spent 15 years in gathering - from recordings, transcripts of talks, and personally attending Master Yuen's seminars. The first 75 pages provide short descriptions of Yuen's teachings about Chinese medicine in general, which provides a good foundation for understanding the text of the Stone teachings.
In the rest of this generous-sized book, the Stones are arranged according to which level of Qi with which they most resonate, which is a potent way to apply them. She also lists their chemical compositions, crystalline structure, level of formations, chinese name, appearance, key characteristics, directionality, functions and uses, and combinations of stones to use.
While this book is aimed at practitioners of Chinese medicine, it should be useful to many health care providers because of her clear explanations. She is a natural teacher; thank you, Leslie Franks!

Lots of practical, science - based info!

This is the only book I've ever seen that takes a detailed, scientific approach to using stones in treating with Chinese Medicine.
If you are a student of Chinese Medicine or a layperson, it's written in very digestible language and goes into great detail.
I'm really enjoying learning the different modes of using the stones, the properties of specific stones and how they link to the body, etc energy and the scientific details of Chinese medicine.

WOW! What an amazing book! It's a big, thick, heavy tome of a book, just chockfull of information. If you have at least a general background in Chinese medicine (you have to have some way of diagnosing the problem according to TCM criteria, or else none of it will make sense), and love crystal healing, this book is absolutely indispensable. I've never seen anything like it. Leslie Franks has my deepest respect for putting this together. I absolutely love it.

About the Author

Patricia D. Miller, MA, is an exercise physiologist and consultant in exercise programs for people with disabilities. Miller initiated mainstream community exercise programs in 26 cities nationwide as part of a grant program funded by the U.S. Department of Education.

An avid triathlete and distance runner, Miller knows firsthand the fitness challenges faced by people with physical impairments. In 1988, she underwent surgery to implant a cardiac pacemaker, yet she continues to train for and participate in road races and triathlons.

Excellent Resource but Dated Information

Overall I found the content to be excellent in describing ways to accommodate disabilities and still provide effective workouts. As a Charcot-Marie-Tooth patient, I was somewhat disappointed to find that the book gave advice based on studies whose conclusions are suspect based on current research. Many studies such as Cohen, et al have shown that moderate weight training provides beneficial muscular growth in CMT patients and improves daily living skills. I wonder how may CMT patients needlessly accept a less-vigorous lifestyle based on that old research? Other than that, the book provides a plethora of accommodations with helpful illustrations.

This textbook provides a first introduction to mathematical logic which is closely attuned to the applications of logic in computer science. In it the authors emphasize the notion that deduction is a form of computation. While all the traditional subjects of logic are covered thoroughly - syntax, semantics, completeness, and compactness - much of the book deals with less traditional topics such as resolution theorem proving, logic programming, and non-classical logics - modal and intuitionistic - which are becoming increasingly important in computer science. The book also provides a systematic treatment of the elements of set theory, a historical overview of its subjects, and an extensive annotated bibliography. No previous exposure to logic is assumed, and so this will be suitable for upper level undergraduate or beginning graduate students in computer science or mathematics.

good logic introduction to computer science students

This book is very carefully written to take care of its computer science and mathematics audience. The writing style is concise, yet unlike some other logic books, this one is far less dense and the content can easily be followed by an advanced undergraduate student (also, of course, by graduate students).
The book contains a relatively balanced coverage on logic. The six sections include Propositional Logic, Predicate Logic, PROLOG, Modal Logic, Intuitionistic Logic and Elements of Set Theory. There is also a concise appendix on the history of logic development.
I especially like the authors' careful treatment on the logics in PROLOG. Also, the authors have taken very good care in preparing the manuscript and my whole class can only find about ten typos after spending a whole semester using this book.
Indeed, this book can easily be re-titled to be "What Every Computer Scientists Should Know About Logic".
Highly recommended.

It is of great help for undergraduate computer science students

I am currently an undergraduate computer science student, and as such, I say that this book was of great help to me in understanding both the basics and more advanced features of logic. I can't say anything about the very advanced parts of the book but if the writing style is the same as in the first 2 chapters, then it should be a great book for both undergraduate and graduate students.

Cuts through jargon & makes Civ Pro make sense

If you're the type of law student who likes concepts broken down into plain English and put into contexts that make sense (and I don't know why you wouldn't be), Elura Nanos and Michele Sileo's Legalese to English: A Workbook for Civil Procedure would be a great addition to your law school library.

Yes, I know law school text books are already ridiculously expensive, so if you're not interested in spending more on study aids, I can understand that -- and to be honest, most study aids that are out there aren't worth buying anyway. Typical hornbooks break down the law for you in handy outline form, sure, but they tend to use all the same words that are already in your textbook and/or those your professor uses in class. That's not going to help you much if you aren't grasping the ideas behind personal jurisdiction, forum non conveniens, venue, Erie, and more.

Legalese to English cuts through all the jargon and breaks down important ideas using a unique combination of case and concept studies, workbook exercises (including writing and outlining assignments), and "study recipes," which provide daily, weekly, and monthly study guidance to help you prepare for both in-class lectures and exams. There are also flowcharts to help with the practicalities of writing exam answers as well as advice on what *not* to do, things to ignore, time management, and more.

I'm not a fan of creating more work for yourself in law school, so if you don't think you need an extra boost in Civ Pro, I'd say it's not worth getting the book; but if you're having a hard time wrapping your head around any of the concepts, Legalese to English just may be the kind of down-to-earth, conversational explanation you need to get you over that hump -- and push your exam grade from a B- to a solid A.

Civ Pro is taken either in the first or second year of law school, but it's also a big bar exam topic, so even if you're past your first go-around with the subject, you still might find Legalese to English useful. The price as of this writing is $44, which puts it pretty much in line with other study aids that go into this much depth, but if you don't want to spend the money yourself, you can consider going in with your study group or other law school friends for a copy -- then you can always sell it to a 1L or someone studying for the bar.

Overall, this a great resource that's well-written and organized beautifully, so I'm giving it five stars. Keep your eye out for future editions of Legalese to English on other subjects as well.

Love this book!!

Concepts and cases were broken down into incredibly easy-to-understand terminology and cases were put into a real-world context, which helped me weed though all the mess.
Even though some of the cases I covered in class varied from the ones in the book, enough of them were the same as to allow me to call this book a "gem!"
Not only does it break down concepts and cases, but it also contains exercises, study recipes, and flowcharts, which helped me see the material and concepts in a different way...increasing my understanding of how they fit together.
Definitely worth the money. I have recommended this book to everyone I know who is taking CivPro and will continue to do so.
I only wish they had written books for other courses. (By the way, I got an A in my class...with this book as my only study guide)

Great study Aid!!

I did not use any other study aid for civil procedure. Of course I tried using e&e but I just didn't find the time. This stuff gets straight to the point, it is in english. I ended up getting an award in my civil procedure class. My school calls it dean's academic achievement award, besides getting an A in the class. I feel like this supplement had a lot to do with it! Thank you ladies! I love your videos! Wish there was more supplements from you....

Excellent Textbook--not just a Q&A

This is the Seventh edition and it covers the question pool in place between July 1, 2011 and June 30, 2015. Be sure you get the right edition for the question pool you're studying!

Excellent book. I'm very pleased with it. The book is laid out rather like a textbook: they take a subject like Antennas and discuss that in depth. After each section, they refer you to the relevant questions in the question pool (included in the back of the book) so you can immediately test yourself. Every question in the pool is answered (one way or another) in the text.

The question pool is set up so you can test yourself, and each question has a reference back to the page where it's answered in the text. So if there's a specific question you want answered, you can quickly find it in the text.

The book is heavily illustrated, well laid out and well written. The print is relatively large so I don't need my bifocals to read it. It's large and quality bound. Some books fall apart as soon as you open them; not this.

I have not tried the CD-ROM with the computer testing. I used the online tests on QRZ.com instead, so I can't evaluate it.

If you're already familiar with the concepts and all you really need is the question pool with a few notes, you'd be better off with another book. But if you want something that covers the material in-depth, rather than just answering specific questions, I don't think you can find a better book than this.

Gordon West versus ARRL Study Guide

If you're unsure if you should buy the Gordon West or AARL ham radio license books, here is my take:
* Gordon West's book: Gordo's book is the only thing you need to pass the test. He gives you just the information you need to answer each question on the test, but the book is rather small and provides very little in-depth explanation. Gordo's book also provides an audio CD that is fun to listen to in the car. You can actually hear communications of all sorts, on many bands, and Gordo explains exactly what it's all about. You certainly don't need this to pass the test, but it's fun and interesting to listen to.
* ARRL License Manual: The ARRL book is much larger than Gordo's book and provides significantly more information. It will of course teach you everything you need to know to easily pass the test, but also gives you a lot more in-depth (and very interesting) information. Just as with my Technician license, I plan to use Gordo's book to get through the test, but have also purchased this book because I want to know a lot more. The AARL book also includes a computer CD which includes practice tests.
* SUMMARY: BOTH books are excellent. Which one you buy is really a matter of how much you want to learn about ham radio. Buy Gordo's book if you just want to pass the test, or buy the ARRL book if you really want to understand a lot about the hobby and pass the test *easily.*

Excellent and Complete Resource

This is a wonderful resource and contains within it everything you need to both learn the subjects covered by the General Class license test and also to pass it - these being two slightly different objectives.

The book itself is well laid out and well written, providing an easy to understand explanation of the theory and principles that one needs to know. As a stand-alone manual/textbook, it deserves very high marks.

Now for the 'secret sauce' in the book. Interspersed in the text are references to specific questions from the question pool, alongside the text that represents the answers to the questions. So you know which parts of the book to concentrate on to pass the test (as opposed to generally understand the entire subject as a whole).

I found it helpful to highlight the exact phrases in the text and link them to the question pointers.

Moving on to a 'learning to pass the test' strategy, there are several things to do. The back of the book has the entire pool of questions, and the answers to each question, and it would be possible to learn them by rote. In addition, each question is also cross-referenced back to the text in the book.

So I'd test myself each question. If I knew the answer and understood it, great. If I didn't, I'd then flip back to the appropriate page in the book and bone up on the theory behind the question and answer until I did know it. Then on to the next question, and so on.

Okay, so far so good. But wait, there's more. Also provided with the book is a CD that loads a program onto your PC (not Mac compatible) and you can use this for several different purposes. You can use it to auto-generate tests and test yourself, to see how you are doing. This is great (although I also very much like the auto-generated tests on eham.net). It also allows you to step through the test questions, either in order, or randomly, and each time you answer a question it then immediately tells you if you got the answer correct or not - this is good; and also then explains the answer - this is great.

So if you get a question wrong, you are immediately given a mini-overview of the topic by the program. This makes it a very efficient way of learning. Only if the mini-overview is insufficient do you then need to go back to the text book.

If you do need to go back to the book, you can zero in immediately on the specific point you need to understand because of the way the specific paragraphs in the book are labelled by the questions that refer to them, allowing you to first get the exact answer/explanation you need, then to read on around the paragraph, before and after, to put it in a broader concept.

Effective use of the book and the software together means you should be able to learn all you need to know in very short order to pass the test. In my case - and I say this not to boast, but rather to simply indicate the efficacy of this learning method - I spent a week of moderate learning prior to sitting the test. At the start of the week, before opening the book for the first time, I was passing about 25% of the questions on eham.net generated tests, and totally lost/out of my depth. At the end of the week, I was getting 34 or 35 of the 35 questions every time, and feeling very comfortable, due to the incredibly efficient learning process this book allows. Best of all, I wasn't merely regurgitating rote-learned answers that I didn't understand, I was feeling comfortable with the topics being tested and the underlying knowledge needed.

Oh yes. The final 'for real' exam? It took me about 5 minutes, and I got all 35 correct. Not because I'm clever. But because this book and learning system is so effective. Thank you very much to the people who designed and wrote it.

Fantastic source!!!

This book is small but mighty!! I was a little taken aback when it arrived as it could fit in a back pocket, but when I started to read it the book was full of great commentary on del Toro's films--not just Pan's Labyrinth. I bought it as a reference for a critical essay on Pan's Labyrinth for an upper-division college course, and it's content did not disappoint--it exceeded my expectations!

Length is Incorrect

This is not about the book, so much as it is about the description. The description indicates that the book is 160 pages in length. This would seem an acceptable length for a detail analysis of the the film. The reality however is that the book is only 96 pages in length. For what it is, it is not bad at all, but it is hardly possible to do credit to a film as complex as Pan's Labyrinth in 96 pages. Caveat Emptor.

I've not finished reading it yet but so far it promises to be a useful interpretation of the film
