Excellent and informative book. If you are into textiles, this book gives a lot of information. It's worth buying. I wish the pages were not glossy cuz that brings geometry into the reading process since you have to angle the book to avoid lights. I also wish the print was a tad larger. About the Author
Jan Dobraczynski was born in Warsaw in 1910, and was educated both at school and university there. His first book "Bernanos the Novelist" was published in 1937. At the outbreak of war he fought as a captain in the cavalry and was wounded. He subsequently spent the war years in political underground activity, being co-editor of two underground periodicals. He was taken prisoner in the Warsaw Uprising in 1944 and had been sent to Belsen and other concentration camps. During World War II, as the head of the Division for Abandoned Children at the Warsaw municipal welfare department, Jan Dobraczynski helped Zegota activists place Jewish children in convents. On his release in 1945 he returned to Poland and spent his life in Warsaw, where he died in 1994. He held the rank of general in the Polish military.He has written over 50 novels, one play, 4 tales, 24 studies, and essays. His greatest successes have been "The Letters of Nicodemus", "The Shadow of the Father", "God's Miser", and "Jesus Christ and His Apostles". Several of his books have been translated into English, French, German, Spanish, Czech, Slovak, and Italian.

I bough this book as a gift since I already read and I really loved it.
Unfortunately the book edition format is very poor: the font is super small, I barely can read it, while there is a huge margin around it. There is no a new page for the new chapter and the text is not even justified. It looks like they just copied it on Word and printed it, trying to save ink and pages.

It really doesn't worth the price.

a low key, straightforward, funny autobiography

Jack Dempsey fought several of the biggest, most controversial fights in boxing history, but you'd never know it by reading this book. His autobiography is as understated and plainspoken, as the Roger Kahn biography is elaborate and flowery. This is particularly the case where Dempsey describes his fights; he has hardly anything to say about ring strategy, or his opponents style. He just states the events leading up to the fight, then gives an account of how the fight went (I don't think he ever spent more than 3 paragraphs on that part). By comparison, I think that Kahn spent at least 30 pages, or so, on just the Willard fight. That's by no means to say that Dempsey's book isn't entertaining, or worth reading -just a remark on the book's style.
I don't think anyone would disagree, factually, with what's written in this book, but, of course, it's difficult to know how judicious he was about what he put in. As regards what he did choose to write, he doesn't whine or make excuses for any of the disasters that happened in, or out of the ring ,and there's only one person who I can recall him having anything bad to say about. To read the book, Dempsey comes off as tough, more or less affable roughneck, but also one who's willing to have a laugh at himself. There's a chapter he spends, basically making fun of the movies and plays he did and his acting ability, which is actually pretty funny. That sort of self depreciating humour is spread throughout the book.
Jack Dempsey was someone who'd worked as a coalminer, rancher, lumberjack, starving hobo prize fighter, and had ridden the rods(the narrow beams underneath a Pullman) back and forth across the country - and once with broken ribs- several times, all before he was 20. Given all that, you'd maybe not expect a wordy book that's overflowing with the author's feelings.
Anyhow, for better or worse, (I tend to lean torward the latter) we won't be seeing his kind again, I don't think, and it's a very different type of American he's been replaced with.

About the Author
John White was born in Liverpool, England, on March 5, 1924, and grew up in Manchester. After serving as a reconnaissance photographer in the Fleet Air Arms during World War II, he completed medical training at Manchester University. He later participated in a variety of short-term missions efforts (including Bible smuggling!) and capitalized on many opportunities to encourage Christians behind the Iron Curtain during the beginning of the Cold War.

On June 25, 1955, White married Laureate May O'Hara. From 1955 to 1964 he served as a medical missionary with New Tribes Mission. Later he was appointed associate general secretary of the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students of Latin America.

White emigrated to Canada with his family in 1965 and later completed his residency in psychiatry in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He next filled the post of associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Manitoba and also served locally as pastor of Church of the Way.

He wrote 25 books as well as numerous articles and study guides. A much sought-after speaker, he lectured around the world at churches, conferences and leadership events. During his later life, White moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, helping to plant a Vineyard church there (Surrey Vineyard) and becoming involved in the larger Vineyard Christian Fellowship.

John White died in 2002, but his written ministry lives on, with over 1.5 million of his books in print.

I think there are issues with the eBook that cause a lot of spelling errors which makes the book a bit annoying to read... But once you get past that it's a great story! I recommend this adventure book to anyone.

Any more beautiful series that are upliting like Anthropos and Narnia??????? Help me with this please.

I really love this book because not only is it a great suspenseful fantasy novel but it means so much to me when there are authors out there who also want to write stories that depict the Divine reaching out and comforting. This author depicts the Divine as the Changer and Ga'al throughout his series. Even through White is of a Christian background like C.S. Lewis and his intention is to create a Christlike allegory, I feel that people of all faiths can truly be touched by stories like Anthropos and Narnia. While the characters struggle, in both these series, they receive comfort and friendship from the Divine Beloved God in an Aspect that is reachable and very human. These two series have such a charm to them that makes you even fall in love with the Divine. If ever you are feeling down, the series of Anthropos and Narnia are wonderful reading. In the Sword Bearer, I like the part when John is crying and then the Changer tells him that he wants to keep his tears forever because his tears are important to Him. Even in times John doubts himself through his struggles in the battle and not knowing how to get along with others, the Changer is reaching out and laughing with him showing him that unconditional love.

Please help me. If anyone knows of anymore series out there that are like the Narnia and Anthropos series in which the Divine manifests in His Aspect of friendship and comfort as He does so beautifully in these series. I always enjoy series that are uplifting in this way and it's hard waiting until 2008 for the next Narnia movies to come out. Can anyone tell me some series that touches the heart and brings comfort and those warm fuzzy feelings of walking on air each time you finish the series?

This is the story of 68 men who enlisted early in the Civil War to fight for the Union. Signing up in Dodge County, Minnesota this group included 10 students from a seminary in Wasioja. The book follows these men through their participation in the Western Campaigns. Their defining moment came on the second day at Chickamauga as part of the defense of Horshoe Ridge under the direct command of General George Thomas, the Rock of Chickamauga. Continuing through Missionary Ridge, Atlanta, the March to the Sea and the Carolinas Campaign, the Second Minnesota lays claim to having marched more than 5,000 miles during their four years of service. This story is of the Dodge County men; how they lived, fought and died. It includes information and photos on several of these soldiers and their final resting places.

About the Author
Michael Eckers resides in southern Minnesota and serves as the Postmaster of the area including Wasioja. He has been a student of the Civil War for nearly 40 years and has presented Minnesota's part publicly to schools and other groups for more than a decade. The Boys of Wasioja is his second published work, the first being a Civil War novel entitled Northern Colors. Michael recently retired from a nearly 35 year career in federal service, including 4 years active duty in the US Navy. He plans on writing and speaking about American history for years to come.

Well written Civi War story

The story begins in the month of May of the year 1861 in the small, five year old town of Wasioja, Minnesota. Wasioja was the result of the vision of two men: Curtis Moses and James George. In addition to two hotels, the rapidly growing town boasted a new school of higher learning. President Lincoln had just taken office, the economy was recovering from an economic panic and the town was growing. Only the dark clouds of civil war darkened the town's otherwise bright sky.
An army was being raised to fight the South. Professors Clinton Cilley and James George, and several of the upper division boys, realized that the Union had to be preserved. Minnesota raised two regiments for the Union Army and James George, a veteran of the Mexican War, was commissioned Captain and given command of Company C of the Second Minnesota. Professor Cilley, now a leading sergeant, and twenty-six boys from the school volunteered and enlisted, ten of which were assigned to Company C.
In October 1861, the second regiment was formed and 1,000 "muskets" and thirty-six "swords" marched through the streets of St. Paul under the command of Colonel H.P. Van Cleve. None that marched or watched had any reason to think that only 300 muskets and three swords in the parade would return with the unit.
The author follows Company C through its participation in the Civil War. He manages to capture the rough life of an infantry company and the brutality of battle in brief, concise paragraphs. Chapters 9 and 10 describe the battles of Chickamuga and Missionary Ridge. Newspaper articles, photographs, excerpts from diaries, letters and reports provide the background for the story of a brutal war. The story includes several of the main battles, Sherman's march through Georgia, South Carolina, and into North Carolina, and ends with the victory parade in Washington, DC in 1865.
The Second Minnesota was formed and later disbanded at Fort Snelling. Of the sixty-eight men from Dodge County assigned to Company C, only twelve were members of the company and discharged when the unit was disbanded.
The author manages to pack a wonderful amount of history and information into a very readable eighty-nine pages and seven appendix.
The Boys of Wasioja is an excellent addition to any Civil War collection and is a great supplement for students studying the Civil War and American History.

"Boys of Wasioja" is a must read for history buffs in the Rochester - Owatonna MN area

I grew up in Dodge Center, a small town not far from Wasioja. As a child my Dad would take me to Wasioja and tell me stories of Wasioja and the Civil War. The "Boys from Wasioja" brought back so many wonderful memories. This is a must read book for anyone who lives in the Rochester Minnesota area. It's a great way to prepare for a trip to Wasioja MN, a place that few people have heard of. I give it 5 stars, a must read for people in the area or people who enjoy Civil War history.

Good read from a new perspective.

Well written telling of a heart-breaking real story. Refreshing that it's not a story of battles and strategy, but instead is a story of foot soldiers and their everyday experiences -- the boredom and monotony as well as the preparation and fighting. Well done.
