The Ape in the Corner Office: Understanding the Office Beast in All of Us, by Richard Conniff

Tired of swimming with the sharks? Fed up with that big ape down the hall? Real animals can teach us better ways to thrive in the workplace jungle.

You’re ambitious and want to get ahead, but what’s the best way to do it? Become the biggest, baddest predator? The proverbial 800-pound gorilla? Or does nature teach you to be more subtle and sophisticated?

Richard Conniff, the acclaimed author of The Natural History of the Rich, has survived savage beasts in the workplace jungle, where he hooted and preened in the corner office as a publishing executive. He’s also spent time studying how animals operate in the real jungles of the Amazon and the African bush.

What he shows in The Ape in the Corner Office is that nature built you to be nice. Doing favors, grooming coworkers with kind words, building coalitions—these tools for getting ahead come straight from the jungle. The stereotypical Darwinian hard-charger supposedly thinks only about accumulating resources. But highly effective apes know it’s often smarter to give them away. That doesn’t mean it’s a peaceable kingdom out there, however. Conniff shows that you can become more effective by understanding how other species negotiate the tricky balance between conflict and cooperation.

Conniff quotes one biologist on a chimpanzee’s obsession with rank: “His attempts to maintain and achieve alpha status are cunning, persistent, energetic, and time-consuming. They affect whom he travels with, whom he grooms, where he glances, how often he scratches, where he goes, what times he gets up in the morning.” Sound familiar? It’s the same behavior you can find written up in any issue of BusinessWeek or The Wall Street Journal.

The Ape in the Corner Office connects with the day-to-day of the workplace because it helps explain what people are really concerned about: How come he got the wing chair with the gold trim? How can I survive as that big ape’s subordinate without becoming a spineless yes-man? Why does being a lone wolf mean being a loser? And, yes, why is it that jerks seem to prosper—at least in the short run?

Review
“A splendid writer—fresh, clear, uncondescending, and with never a false step.” —New York Times Book Review

“The Ape in the Corner Office is an entertaining safari through the commercial jungle, observing the habits of business apes as they swing from branch office to branch office.” —Desmond Morris, author of The Naked Ape

“Chockablock with fascinating tales from the juxtaposition of natural history and work. If you’re thoughtful about what you do (and you care about how we got here), this is a page-turner.” —Seth Godin, author of All Marketers Are Liars

“Richard Conniff puts the business suit back on Desmond Morris’s The Naked Ape. This book moves beyond the simplistic embrace of aggression by sociobiologists of the past and the management clichs of today. Conniff effortlessly draws upon updated insights from ethology, economics, psychology, and the arts to apply factual insights to current headlines and everyday business life. The law of the jungle turns out to be a complex code of competition and cooperationthat Conniff applies to entrepreneurial triumphs, governance collapses, the sharing spirit ofinspired work teams, and the sabotage of conspiring colleagues. While this lively research-anchored book rewards the reader with engaging insights into the lives of celebrities, our co-workers, and our neighbors, it never feels like gossipy voyeurism, just vital clairvoyance.” —Professor Jeffrey Sonnenfeld, associate dean, Yale School of Management

Chapter 1: YES, IT IS A GODDAMN JUNGLE OUT THERE

Why Acting Like an Animal Comes So Easy

Animals in the wild lead lives of compulsion and necessity within an unforgiving social hierarchy in an environment where the supply of fear is high and the supply of food low and where territory must constantly be defended and parasites forever endured. —Yann Martel, Life of Pi

Sounds like an average day at the office, doesn’t it? Compulsion, necessity, the unforgiving social hierarchy, parasites . . . Oh, and the high supply of fear. That one I could feel butterfly-fluttering in my abdomen and ant-dancing out on the fringes of my peripheral nervous system. I was standing in front of the top North American distributors for a leading European manufacturer. We had assembled at a resort in the Grand Tetons, in an area still populated by grizzly bears and gray wolves, to which I expected shortly to be thrown. I’d been asked to give a talk about how businesspeople act like animals. I was vaguely nervous.

The top baboon for the North American division, a big, bluff fellow, sat in the front row, arms folded, with his wife (blond, witty, appealing) to one side and his head of sales (short, round, ebullient) on the other. At dinner the night before I had gotten to know many of these people by first name. I recalled a quote about how businesspeople “don’t like being compared to bare-ass monkeys.” I took a deep breath.

Everybody in the room had heard the statistic that humans are roughly 99 percent genetically identical to chimpanzees. By some estimates, the difference between our two species may be a matter of fewer than fifty genes, out of perhaps twenty-five thousand shared in common. But hardly anyone in the business world seems to have considered what that might mean in our working lives. More often than not, managers endeavor to minimize the human, much less the animal, element and make companies hum like machines. In their own lives, individual workers also tend to treat human nature mainly as something to be overcome, by getting the hair waxed from their torsos or added to their scalps, by dressing for success, by giving at least the appearance of handling stress. (Was that the serene brow of Botox I detected on a woman in the first row? It was really too early in my talk for her to be numb with boredom.)

I asked my audience to think for a moment about how their everyday workplace behavior might be shaped by forces that are less susceptible to change—by the drives and predispositions bequeathed to us by our long evolution first as animals and later as tribal humans. By fear. By anger. By the primordial yearning for social allies and for status. Think of yourself, I suggested, as part of a primate hierarchy unconsciously following thirty-million-year-old rules for establishing dominance and submission, for waging combat and maintaining peace. Think about how the alpha, whether chimpanzee or chief executive officer, typically asserts authority with the identical language of posture, stride, lift of chin, directness of gaze, the sharp glower to quell an unruly subordinate.

The head guy in the first row started to light up at this, especially when I got to the stuff about using political maneuvering among chimpanzees as a better way to understand boardroom confrontations. He surged out of his seat when the talk was done and launched into what he called the natural history of the boardroom.

In the upper echelons at company headquarters, he said, the conference tables are circular rather than rectangular, ostensibly for a round-table atmosphere of equality. “Well, bollocks,” he said. In fact, there is a distinct hierarchy, and everybody knows where everybody else stands, or sits, in it; the circular form merely makes the combat a little more open. In a week or two, he said, he’d be heading overseas for a meeting of a committee where the chairman had lately vacated his seat. “No one will say anything. But everyone will be looking at that seat and wondering who’s going to take it, whether anyone will have the audacity to sit there.”

“You should sit there,” the head of sales ventured.

“No, I’d be like the baboon trying to rise three steps above his rank—I’d get knocked down.” He was a realist, yet keen for the combativeness that would inevitably surface. “I love it,” he said. “Sometimes when there’s a kill about to happen, there’s a moment of hesitation when people aren’t sure if it’s going to happen.”

By now my eyes were beginning to widen.

“And then they get the scent, and they know it’s going to be okay, and they know who’s going to take the lead, and who’s going to come in for the kill.”

“It’s like the Serengeti,” the sales guy agreed. “The round table just makes it easier for everybody to see the kill.”

“Jesus,” I said.

“Don’t worry,” the head guy’s wife interjected, taking him gently by the elbow. “I’m really in control here.” And everybody laughed.

THIS COMPANY IS A ZOO

Maybe I shouldn’t have been surprised that some businesspeople are in fact entirely prepared to liken themselves to bare-ass monkeys. They just want to be dominant, predatory bare-ass monkeys. Animal analogies have always ranked among the favorite clichs of the business world, where eight-hundred-pound gorillas run with the big dogs, swim with the sharks, occasionally find themselves up to their asses in alligators, and, if they are not crazy like a fox, can end up caught like a deer in the headlights.

When Richard Kinder quit Enron to form his own gas company in 1996, he disguised his dismay with Kenneth Lay’s leadership under a standard animalism: “If you aren’t the lead dog, the scenery never changes.” H. Ross Perot also resorted to animal analogies when he was tormenting the hapless, imperial General Motors CEO Roger Smith: “Revitalizing General Motors is like teaching an elephant to tap-dance. You find the sensitive spots and start poking.” (Or did he say “lap dance”? In any case, Lou Gerstner at IBM knew a good line when he saw it, and stole it for the title of his book, Who Says Elephants Can’t Dance?) Even the eminently clever satirist Scott Adams ended up likening almost everybody in the working world of his antihero Dilbert to a weasel.

The truth beneath the clichs is that the lives of animals are not nearly so simple as we used to think. Nor are the lives of working people so complex as we like to believe. Moreover, the two have a lot in common, and not just in the obvious ways. For instance, aggressive business types often employ animal analogies because they mistake them for The Art of War by other means. The idea of animal troops ruled by “demonic males” dishing out “nature, red in tooth and claw” appeals to a certain view of business life: It really is a goddamn jungle out there. And don’t get me wrong. This is a very entertaining view, and one I intend to indulge fully over the course of this book. Like my North American division chief, we all love a good brawl, if only from a safe distance.

But it’s also a narrow, misleading point of view. Here’s the sort of surprising thing we can learn from a more careful look at the animal world: Even chimps spend only about 5 percent of their day in aggressive encounters. By contrast, they devote as much as 20 percent of the working day to grooming family, friends, and even subordinates. When they fight with rivals in the troop, they often go well out of their way, after the dust settles, to kiss and make up. And why should working people care how chimpanzees resolve their conflicts? Because our social behaviors and theirs evolved from the same ancestors and still follow many of the same rules. In one case described later in this book, a better understanding of the nature of reconciliation saved a company $75 million in litigation and insurance costs. Even in our everyday working lives, human bosses, like alpha chimps, sometimes drive their underlings beyond any reasonable limits. They might do better in life (and in business) if they understood just how far even a dumb ape will go to achieve harmony in the aftermath of conflict.

BITE THAT METAPHOR

Businesspeople regularly trot out animal analogies that make no sense. Despite their reputation as cold-eyed realists, they apparently have trouble separating fact from ridiculous fiction. You can do better:

Ostriches don’t bury their heads in the sand. In fact, ostriches merely lower their heads to the ground to avoid detection while keeping an eye out for danger. Some biologists suggest that they are trying to disguise the 400-pound bulk of their torsos as a termite mound. But in the African savanna where they live, actually burying one’s head in the sand would be a good way to get bitten on the ass by a lion. (What biologists call “nonadaptive behavior.”)

Lemmings don’t leap off cliffs to commit mass suicide. When a population boom causes overcrowding, these Arctic rodents do the sensible thing and migrate en masse in search of a new home. A few of them may occasionally get crowded off a ledge as they swarm into unfamiliar territory. But it’s an accident. Really. The myth of mass suicide got enshrined in modern urban lore by Disney filmmakers in the 1950s, who had the dumb idea that forcing captive lemmings off a cliff would make for dramatic film footage.

The main benefit of reading this book is you gain a description of the world of people that matches reality but with enough subs
By Michael Gautier
The book is the most effective tool I found to allow yourself to step outside of yourself and view the whole human species and yourself in a completely nonfiction way. What are people and why do they do the things they do? Who are you and why do you do the things you do? Who am I and why do I do the things I do? Three questions that are similar but different as you go from everyone to yourself.

The book is short but has high information density. That means it should be a quick read but will probably take longer to get through if you are not familiar with the ideas presented. The content of the book challenges many assumptions about how we exist and act in the world. I am not describing a work of philosophy but of hard-nosed, empirical research that the rational mind will generally fail to refute.

I do not think the author intended to write a book that clarifies the world as it is, but I see that as an outcome of the work. The main benefit of reading this book is you gain a description of the world of people that matches reality but with enough substance and interpretation to make that description useful. You have to try and suspend your judgments when reading this book to get the most use out of it.

I found the book powerful and credible. I give it 5 stars for 100% useful content throughout, accessible writing style, and for no apparent signs of bias. The writer does offer opinions and personal stories in some parts, but they are mostly of the humorous kind or blatant sarcasm. With that said, book does not try to qualify the behaviors described as either good or bad but more or less natural. The main theme is that there are plausible reasons for why people behave in certain ways that can be understood by examining biological ancestry. The case is made in an "intriguing" and "compelling" way in which you have to decide what to make of it. Despite its independent tone, there is a treasure of advice to be uncovered from this unassuming work.

The Underlying Ape
By Doctor Moss
We like to think of ourselves as “evolved”. We might be willing to grant that we are animals — after all, we have arms, legs — actually we have all the same organs, limbs, etc. as apes (make that “other apes”). But we really do want to insist we are somehow just a completely different kind of thing. After all, we are rational, we have culture, we watch tv, . . .

Books like this remind us that we really are animals, that our thoroughly rational self-image is a thin veneer over our animal selves. So much of our behavior mirrors the behaviors not only of apes but other more distant relatives, despite anything we may think about ourselves. We vie for the corner office just like apes vie with their fellow apes for grooming partners, sexual partners, the best food, the best nest location, . . . . We think our organizational structures, our decision processes, our workplace designs are all in the interests of business and efficiency. Maybe they are, but they are also those same bits of competition and hierarchy that we see in our cousins.

Conniff even cites the suggestion that language itself — one of the things we think strongly sets us apart — evolved as a substitute for grooming. Set aside for the moment pictures of language as statements of facts and think instead of ritualistic exchanges of “How are you?”, day to day gossip, “exchanges of pleasantries”. It’s easy then to see much of our linguistic behavior as establishing and maintaining communal and personal relationships, just as apes do in grooming.

There are other books on the topic, and Conniff cites a number of them, notably Frans de Waal’s classic Chimpanzee Politics. Conniff himself is not a scientist like de Waal, but he’s a rare cross of scientific, management, and journalistic experience. De Waal studies chimps, and for the most part he leaves the comparisons to us to make. Conniff speaks straightforwardly of human, mostly office behavior.

Conniff has put in his time in business and office environments. He starts there and works back from our behavior there to find our similarities and shared roots with other animals. In doing so, he’s not only bringing us closer to our animal relatives, but he’s also, again like de Waal, bringing them closer to us — he dispels the myths of the constantly bloodthirsty, violent animal and puts in its place a much more complex picture, containing compassion, cooperation, coordination, and, above all, community-building.

Much of the book, especially the first half, addresses hierarchy. Expressions of hierarchical relationships needn’t be large and explicit. They can be facial expressions, postures, positionings in a room — all of these things we can, if we take the time, observe in ourselves just as we can in apes. Hierarchy after all is what gives so much structure to community. Hierarchy gives us not only competition but stability — when we behave appropriately to our places, expressing dominance or submission, or just peer standing, we make it possible to carry on without friction.

In addition to hierarchy (subordination and dominance), Conniff discusses atlruism, intimidation, imitation, and deception, all in the context of commonalities with our animal relatives.

In reading the book, I found myself wanting not to engage in some of the behaviors Conniff describes, not to be driven by these biologically-rooted drives. But actually I think the healthier attitude is to embrace them, enjoying that biologically-driven part of us. After all, that’s what got us where we are today (both for the good and the bad). Sometimes hierarchy in particular is offensive or extreme, and it needs to be resisted. But try to do without it altogether. We’ll never not be animals.

Do you finish books because you're "supposed to"? This one you'll WANT to read!
By Secret Santa
Richard Conniff is an extraordinary writer. If you're a Malcolm Gladwell fan, as I am, and you participate, on any level, in the corporate world, then prepare to be delighted you treated yourself to this book. With dry wit and a density of research material (studies, anecdotes perfectly suited to the point), Conniff does to the working world what he did to the rarified social circles of the very rich: he examines his subject from the point of view of a naturalist's blind and then reports the behavior of these strangest of all animals, the human being.

Why is being a jerk a workable strategy for a company boss, and under what circumstances does that strategy break down? Why is it a bad idea to appear overly enthusiastic (waving at passers-by, etc.) in your new office? What makes one kind of corporate culture (Google, Pixar, etc.) work and another (Enron) toxic and implosive? All this can be understood by examining corporate culture through the eyes of a veteran naturalist.

I'd offer to loan you my copy of "Corner Office" and my other favorite of Conniff's books ("Natural History of the Rich"), but I'm afraid I'm going to keep mine close at hand. I'm going to be reading them again very soon.

From one monkey to another, you're gonna love this guy's work. You'll be so elevated by the writing you'll swing from the tree limbs, and then break one off, and then hit the ground with it so that all the other monkeys can see that you can break a really big branch (does any of this simian behavior strike you as somehow familiar?). Why Richard Conniff isn't yet a household name is, to me, a mystery which, given time, I'm sure he will explore in another hilariously insightful book, this time about the nature of celebrity.

Review
“One of the most outstanding projects in health research of the past century. It's relevant, it's caring, it's innovative, it's extremely well executed and it's very, very useful."
—T. Colin Campbell, Ph.D., author of The China Study

“Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn has directed pioneering research demonstrating that the progression of even severe coronary heart disease can often be reversed by making comprehensive change in diet and lifestyle.“
—Dean Ornish, M.D, founder, president and director of Preventive Medicine Research Institute and author of Dr. Dean Ornish’s Program for Reversing Heart Disease

“I highly recommend Dr. Esselstyn’s book.”

—Kathy Freston, author of Veganist

“Dr. Esselstyn has always been ahead of his time. His focus on the healing powers of proper nutrition on diseased coronary arteries has now proven right, raising another unthinkable notion—that heart patients can cure themselves.”
—Bernadine Healy, M.D., former Director of the National Institutes of Health

“A hard nosed scientist shows us his secrets for successfully cleaning the rusting arteries of so many patients - and it doesn't even hurt.”
—Mehmet Oz, M.D., coauthor, You: The Owner’s Manual

“Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, Jr., is certainly the father (and the mother) of the now proven hypothesis that you can reverse severe arterial disease (including severe disease of the arteries supposed to nourish your heart). He proved that radical changes in diet (and that alone) cause radical changes in the age and disease of your arteries—and that you can make your arteries much younger. So even if you only want to try this plan five days a week, this book is a must purchase because of its great recipes that spice low fat plant based food to high taste—you may even want to enjoy (and know I am using that word specifically and as intentionally as the proposal I made to my wife 33 years ago) the recipes all 7 days."
—Michael Roizen, M.D., coauthor of YOU: The Owner's Manual and YOU: On A Diet. The Owner's Manual to Waist Management

"This powerful program will make you virtually heart-attack proof. Based on decades of research, Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn has shown not only how to prevent heart disease, but how to reverse it-even for people who have been affected for many years. I strongly recommend this important book."
—Neal D. Barnard, M.D., President, Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, and author of Breaking the Food Seduction

"If you have heart disease, this book should be essential reading. It could save your life."
—Michael F. Jacobson, Executive Director, Center for Science in the Public Interest

“Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease provides a practical approach for people to regain their lost health. Considering the worldwide prevalence of coronary artery disease this book should become the bestseller of all times."
—John McDougall, M.D., author of The McDougall Program

“Dr. Esselstyn’s solution in Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease is as profound as Newton’s discovery of gravity. Half of all Americans dying today could have changed their date with the undertaker by following Dr. Esselstyn’s plan.”
—Howard F. Lyman, author of No More Bull! and Mad Cowboy

“Dr. Esselstyn's eminently successful arrest-and-reversal therapy for heart disease through patient education and empowerment as the treatment of choice will send shock waves through a mercenary medical system that focuses largely on pills and procedures.”
—Hans Diehl, Founder & Director of the Coronary Health Improvement Program (CHIP)

The Heart of the Matter
I
Eating to Live

“IT WAS A FRIDAY in November 1996. I had operated all day. I finished, said good-bye to my last patient, and got a very, very bad headache. It hit me in a flash. I had to sit down. A minute or two after that, the chest pain started. It radiated up my arm and shoulder and into my jaw.”
These are the words of Joe Crowe, the doctor who succeeded me as chairman of the breast cancer task force at the Cleveland Clinic. He was having a heart attack. He was only forty-four years old. He had no family history of heart disease, was not overweight or diabetic, and did not have high blood pressure or a bad cholesterol count. In short, he was not the usual candidate for a heart attack. Nonetheless, he had been struck—and struck hard.
In this book, I tell Joe Crowe’s story, along with those of many other patients I have treated over the past twenty years. My subject is coronary artery disease, its cause, and the revolutionary treatment, available to all, that can abolish it and that has saved Joe Crowe and many others. My message is clear and absolute: coronary artery disease need not exist, and if it does, it need not progress. It is my dream that one day we may entirely abolish heart disease, the scourge of the affluent, modern West, along with an impressive roster of other chronic illnesses.
Here are the facts. Coronary artery disease is the leading killer of men and women in Western civilization. In the United States alone, more than half a million people die of it every single year. Three times that number suffer known heart attacks. And approximately three million more have “silent” heart attacks, experiencing minimal symptoms and having no idea, until well after the damage is done, that they are in mortal danger. In the course of a lifetime, one out of every two American men and one out of every three American women will have some form of the disease.
The cost of this epidemic is enormous—greater, by far, than that of any other disease. The United States spends more than $250 billion a year on heart disease. That’s about the same amount the nation spent on the first two and half years of its military venture in Iraq, and fully twice as much as the federal government allocates annually for all research and development—including R&D for defense and national security.1
But here is the truly shocking statistic: nearly all of that money is devoted to treating symptoms. It pays for cardiac drugs, for clot-dissolving medications, and for costly mechanical techniques that bypass clogged arteries or widen them with balloons, tiny rotating knives, lasers, and stents. All of these approaches carry significant risk of serious complications, including death. And even if they are successful, they provide only temporary relief from the symptoms. They do nothing at all to cure the underlying disease or to prevent its development in other potential victims.
I believe that we in the medical profession have taken the wrong course. It is as if we were simply standing by, watching millions of people march over a cliff, and then intervening in a desperate, last-minute attempt to save them once they have fallen over the edge. Instead, we should be teaching them how to avoid the chasm entirely, how to walk parallel to the precipice so that they will never fall at all.
I believe that coronary artery disease is preventable, and that even after it is under way, its progress can be stopped, its insidious effects reversed. I believe, and my work over the past twenty years has demonstrated, that all this can be accomplished without expensive mechanical intervention and with minimal use of drugs. The key lies in nutrition—specifically, in abandoning the toxic American diet and maintaining cholesterol levels well below those historically recommended by health policy experts.
The bottom line of the nutritional program I recommend is that it contains not a single item of any food known to cause or promote the development of vascular disease. I often ask patients to compare their coronary artery disease to a house fire. Your house is on fire because eating the wrong foods has given you heart disease. You are spraying gasoline on the fire by continuing to eat the very same foods that caused the disease in the first place.
I don’t want my patients to pour a single thimbleful of gasoline on the fire. Stopping the gasoline puts out the fire. Reforming the way you eat will end the heart disease.
Here are the rules of my program in their simplest form:
You may not eat anything with a mother or a face (no meat, poultry, or fish).
You cannot eat dairy products.
You must not consume oil of any kind—not a drop. (Yes, you devotees of the Mediterranean Diet, that includes olive oil, as I’ll explain in Chapter 10.)
Generally, you cannot eat nuts or avocados.
You can eat a wonderful variety of delicious, nutrient-dense foods:
All vegetables except avocado. Leafy green vegetables, root vegetables, veggies that are red, green, purple, orange, and yellow and everything in between.
All legumes—beans, peas, and lentils of all varieties.
All whole grains and products, such as bread and pasta, that are made from them—as long as they do not contain added fats.
All fruits.

It works. In the first continuous twelve-year study of the effects of nutrition in severely ill patients, which I will describe in this book, those who complied with my program achieved total arrest of clinical progression and significant selective reversal of coronary artery disease. In fully compliant patients, we have seen angina disappear in a few weeks and abnormal stress test results return to normal.
And consider the case of Joe Crowe. After his heart attack in 1996, tests showed that the entire lower third of his left anterior descending coronary artery—the vessel leading to the front of the heart and nicknamed, for obvious reasons, “the widowmaker”—was significantly diseased. His coronary artery anatomy excluded him as a candidate for surgical bypass, angioplasty, or stents, and at such a young age, with a wife and three small children, Dr. Crowe was understandably disconsolate and depressed. Since he already exercised, did not use tobacco, and had a relatively low cholesterol count of 156 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL), there seemed to be nothing he could modify, no obvious reforms in lifestyle that might halt the disease.
Joe was aware of my interest in coronary disease. About two weeks after his heart attack, he and his wife, Mary Lind, came to dinner at our house and I had a chance to share the full details of my research. Both Joe and Mary Lind immediately grasped the implications for Joe of a plant-based diet. All at once, instead of having no options, they were empowered. In Mary Lind’s words, “It was our own personal disaster, and suddenly there was something small we could do.” Immediately, Joe embarked on my nutrition program, refusing to take any cholesterol-lowering drugs, and he redefined the word commitment. He stuck to the plan rigorously, eventually reducing his total blood cholesterol count to just 89 mg/dL and cutting his LDL, or “bad” cholesterol, from 98 mg/dL to 38 mg/dL.
About two and a half years after Joe adopted a strict plant-based diet, there came a point when he was exceptionally busy professionally, under considerable stress, and he noted a return of some discomfort in his chest. His cardiologists, worried about the recurrence of angina, asked for more tests to see what was going on.
On the day of his follow-up angiogram, I went to Dr. Crowe’s office after work. After we greeted each other, I thought I saw moisture in his eyes. “Is everything OK?” I asked.
“You saved my life,” he declared. “It’s gone! It’s not there anymore! Something lethal is gone! My follow-up angiogram was normal.”
Nearly ten years later, Mary Lind recalled that they had wondered, that first evening at our house, “how the Esselstyns did it”—how we had managed to completely change the way we eat. “Now it’s part of our family,” she says. “We’ve eaten the same things for a long time, and I’m on autopilot.”
Later, when I asked Joe what made him decide to change, he responded very simply. “We believed you,” he said, and added, “since I had nothing else, the diet came first. If I had had bypass surgery, diet would not have been first. The diet set us on another path, empowered to do something we knew we could do.”
Joe Crowe’s angiograms—both the original, taken after the heart attack, and the follow-up, two and a half years later—are shown in Figure 1 (see insert). It is the most complete resolution of coronary artery disease I have seen, graphic proof of the power of plant-based nutrition to enable the body to heal itself.
The dietary changes that have helped my patients over the past twenty years can help you, too. They can actually make you immune to heart attacks. And there is considerable evidence that they have benefits far beyond coronary artery disease. If you eat to save your heart, you eat to save yourself from other diseases of nutritional extravagance: from strokes, hypertension, obesity, osteoporosis, adult-onset diabetes, and possibly senile mental impairment, as well. You gain protection from a host of other ailments that have been linked to dietary factors, including impotence and cancers of the breast, prostate, colon, rectum, uterus, and ovaries. And if you are eating for good health in this way, here’s a side benefit you might not have expected: for the rest of your life, you will never again have to count calories or worry about your weight.
An increasing number of doctors are aware that diet plays a crucial role in health, and that nutritional changes such as those I recommend can have dramatic effects on the development and progression of disease. But for a number of reasons, current medical practice places little emphasis on primary and secondary prevention. For most physicians, nutrition is not of significant interest. It is not an essential pillar of medical education; each generation of medical students learns about a different set of pills and procedures, but receives almost no training in disease prevention. And in practice, doctors are not rewarded for educating patients about the merits of truly healthy lifestyles.
Over the past one hundred years, the mechanical treatment of disease has increasingly dominated the medical profession in the United States. Surgery is the prototype, and its dramatic progress—light-years removed from the cathartics, bloodletting, and amputations that dominated medicine in previous centuries—is nothing short of breathtaking. But surgery has serious flaws. It is expensive, painful, and frightening, often disabling and disfiguring, and too often merely a temporary stopgap against the disease it is intended to treat. It is a mechanical approach to a biological problem.
Perhaps no area of medicine better illustrates the mechanical approach to disease than cardiology and cardiac surgery. Consider: the United States contains just 5 percent of the global population, but every year, physicians in American hospitals perform more than 50 percent of all the angioplasties and bypass procedures in the entire world. One reason is that mechanical medicine is romantic and dramatic, a natural magnet for media attention. Remember the drama several years ago surrounding implants of artificial hearts? Most of the recipients died within weeks of their surgery, and all lived their last days tethered to life-support machinery that, far from enhancing their quality of life, drastically reduced it. But no matter: the dramatic interventions engaged the national imagination for months on end.
All told, there has been little incentive for physicians to study alternate ways to manage disease, so the mechanical/procedural approach continues to dominate the profession even though it offers little to the unsuspecting millions about to become the next victims of disease. Modern hospitals offer almost nothing to enhance public health. They are cathedrals of sickness.
There are some signs of change. Physicians and researchers increasingly agree that lifestyle changes—controlling blood pressure, stopping smoking, reducing cholesterol, exercising, and modifying diets—are essential to overall health. It is hard to deny the evidence, mounting with every passing year, that people who have spent a lifetime consuming the typical American diet are in dire trouble. Dr. Lewis Kuller of the University of Pittsburgh recently reported the ten-year findings of the Cardiovascular Health Study, a project of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. His conclusion is startling: “All males over 65 years of age, exposed to a traditional Western lifestyle, have cardiovascular disease and should be treated as such.”2
Even interventional cardiologists are beginning to question the rationale of their procedures. In 1999, cardiologist David Waters of the University of California performed a study that compared the results of angioplasty—in which a balloon is inserted into a coronary artery to widen the vessel and improve blood flow—with the use of drugs to aggressively reduce serum cholesterol levels. There was no disputing the outcome. The patients who had the drug treatment to lower cholesterol had fewer hospitalizations for chest pain and fewer heart attacks than those who underwent angioplasty and standard postoperative care.3
The larger lesson of that study is that systemic treatment of disease through aggressive reduction of cholesterol is clearly superior to selective intervention at a single site where an artery has been clogged and narrowed. And it caused considerable uproar among cardiologists. As Dr. Waters observes, “There is a tradition in cardiology that doesn’t want to hear that.”
Why? Money! For many years, I resisted that conclusion, but the weight of the evidence is overwhelming. Interventional cardiologists earn hundreds of thousands of dollars annually, and particularly busy ones make millions. In addition, cardiology procedures generate huge revenues for hospitals. And the insurance industry supports the mechanical/procedural approach to vascular disease. It is far easier to document and quantify procedures for reimbursement than it is to document and quantify lifestyle changes that prevent the need for such procedures in the first place.
As a physician, I am embarrassed by my profession’s lack of interest in healthier lifestyles. We need to change the way we approach chronic disease.
The work I will describe in the following chapters confirms that sustained nutrition changes and, when necessary, low doses of cholesterol-reducing medication will offer maximum protection from vascular disease. Anyone who follows the program faithfully will almost certainly see no further progression of disease, and will very likely find that it selectively regresses. And the corollary, overwhelmingly supported by global population studies, is that persons without the disease who adopt these same dietary changes will never develop heart disease.
Cardiologists who have seen my peer-reviewed data often concede that coronary artery disease may be arrested and reversed through changes in diet and lifestyle, but then add that they don’t believe their patients would follow such “radical” nutritional changes.
But the truth is that there is nothing radical about my nutrition plan. It’s about as mainstream as you can get. For 4 billion of the world’s 5.5 billion people, the nutrition program I recommend is standard fare, and heart disease and many other chronic ailments are almost unknown. The word radical better describes the typical American diet, which guarantees that millions will perish from withering vascular systems. And in my experience, patients who realize that they have a clear choice—between invasive surgery that will do nothing to cure their underlying disease and nutritional changes that will arrest and reverse the disease and improve the quality of their lives—willingly adopt the dietary changes.

History will remember Dr. Esselstyn
By Pushkar Sinroja
This book saved my life. I accidently stumbled upon Dr. Esselstyn's research and recommendations when I was bed ridden with severe blood pressure which was getting worse by the day and I knew that it was just a matter of limited time before I expire. I was 52 years old then. I started the change recommended here in this book. Today, I am on no medicine today. I have lost 18 kgs but the most important fact is that my body composition report says 18% total fat, 9 % visceral fat, and 30 years internal ageing - consistently. These facts do not lie so anyone with heart problem, close your eyes and embrace Dr. Esselstyn's wisdom. I am not particularly religious but I would still say " God Bless Him " !

4/08/2013-Heart attack. 6/04/2013-Cardiologist said don't come back for 6 months!
By Todd Wiens
This is my first review on Amazon.
I just turned 51. I have exercised since our first gym membership in 1978. I have worked out extensively. I have 2 bikes I ride regularly. I have a gym in my garage, with pull-up tower and padded floor and TV/DVD player. I have eaten what I thought was a healthy diet. Take vitamins every day. In other words, I was in pretty good shape and thought I was OK. On April 8, 2013, I had just finished exercising. I felt like I really needed to eat. Ate some greek yogurt and strawberries. Still didn't feel right. I laid down with a fan blowing on me. I felt overheated. I noticed a slight numbness in my left arm. Strange. Swallowed an aspirin. Noticed my arm was a little more numb. Chewed an aspirin. Then, I thought to myself "If I don't get off of the floor, I may never get up". Told my wife to take me to the new heart hospital, conveniently located about 1 1/2 miles from my house.

45 minutes after walking into the ER, I was being wheeled into my room with 2 stents installed. Wake up call.
The Cardiologist said that in my main artery, towards the center of my chest, I had 100% blockage. He cleared that and put in a stent. Then, below that blockage was a 70% blockage. Cleared and stent. In the other main artery, on the other side of my heart, there is 50% blockage. He can't put in a stent because it's too dangerous. Have to clear it with diet. I tell you all of this to give you the back-story.

I went to Amazon and looked for books on cardiovascular disease. I found this book. My wife and I read the reviews and decided to give it a try. The results have been amazing! Today, we have been on a plant-based diet for 4 weeks. A lot of these reviews will tell you to just try it for a month. Good advice. Just do that and see what happens.

Here are my cholesterol numbers. My numbers from the first day at the hospital are 4/08/13. Last week, after 3 weeks of the plant diet, I had my blood tested again. That was 5/28/13.

Total Cholesterol- was 271, now 120, should be under 200, or 150 to be heart attack proof.
LDL or bad cholesterol- was 206, now 68, should be under 100.
Cholesterol/HDL ratio was 5.2, now 3.2, Men: 5.0 is average.
Triglycerides-was 81, now 90, should be under 150.

I have lost 11 pounds in 4 weeks. My wife has lost 8 pounds. She has had IBS all of her life. Since we started the plant eating lifestyle, she doesn't have stomach aches anymore. She used to have them all the time. Our energy levels have never been better. My mind is sharper than ever. You feel so much better, lighter, cleaner. It's hard to describe. Now, after a night's sleep, we wake up feeling like we slept, instead of waking up tired.

A friend of mine watched the Forks Over Knives documentary with his parents and they all decided to try it. His Dad has been diabetic for a long time. At the start of the plant diet, his blood sugar was 253. After one week of plant eating he dropped 120 points! Last week, after 2 weeks of plants, his blood sugar was 96! He has never had it that low.

Get the book. Read it. Watch Forks Over Knives. Follow the guidelines. Tell your friends. It works Yesterday my Cardiologist said that I am doing so great that he doesn't need to see me for 6 months!
I hope this helps you with your decision.

Big cholesterol number changes in just 3 weeks!
By TLM
This plan works. I was diagnosed with high cholesterol and high glucose/AIC in early April (4/4/16). Since then, I've lost 15 lbs, my total cholesterol dropped 108 points! Am still waiting to re-run A1C numbers but blood glucose has been in the normal ranges due to the weight coming off. I ordered the companion cookbook as well, and there are plenty of recipes to try once you get in the zone of how to eat, shop and cook. I'm still learning how to cook without any 'healthy fat' oils, but with the progress I've seen so far, I'm not interested in going back to the way things were.

It is a vegan eating plan, with no fats or oils. There are recipes for all kinds of meals, they provide recommended product items that are considered "OK", and you learn to read labels, not just the numbers and marketing hype. Would highly recommend to anyone who understands that unhealthy eating habits accumulate overtime and take their toll. This book provides a chance and a roadmap to turn things around before it's too late.

The reviews on this site helped me choose this book. When I read through the reviews where people posted how their numbers changed, it provided motivation for me, so thank you to all of the reviewers who posted their feedback and included their own personal experiences.

“I’VE MADE A TERRIBLE MISTAKE.”

So confessed Joy Sharp, a longtime budget director for the University of Arkansas. Trembling and unsteady, she informed her boss that she had lost control of their division’s finances.

It was an understatement. University leaders would soon discover that Sharp had routinely spent millions of dollars beyond what was available, shifting money from one account to another in what the university’s treasurer described as “deliberate efforts to disguise” her division’s true financial condition. In a private email, University Chancellor G. David Gearhart bemoaned that Sharp’s actions had created “a colossal fiscal crisis.” It was a hard admission; ten years earlier, Gearhart himself had promoted Sharp, his former aide, to the budget management position.

Most leaders would have responded to the disclosure by immediately commissioning a thorough audit and review of Sharp’s activity. After all, it was possible that fraud occurred and that others were complicit. If nothing else, an audit would demonstrate the university’s commitment to “Transparency and Accountability for the People of Arkansas,” which happened to be the title of the school’s strategic plan.

But instead, Gearhart and other university officials quietly engaged in a disturbing series of panic-fueled leadership decisions. The result was a slow-burning scandal, one that involved attempts to deceive investigators, hide and destroy records, and silence witnesses. Those actions soon proved more costly to the university’s reputation and credibility than the unchecked spending that created the deficit.

PLEASE DELETE provides a case study of how a large institution, its powerful and overconfident leaders, and their well-placed allies responded to a crisis, and in the process, inflamed it. PLEASE DELETE is a cautionary tale, one that reveals the damage, distrust, and victimization that often result when public officials try to conceal their transgressions.

Review
"[A] compelling and clear account of a complicated and distressing story....PLEASE DELETE should be required reading for any student of leadership and politics and anyone who cares about public accountability." Brian Naylor, National Public Radio "[A] fascinating and revealing case study of how leaders react and respond to pressure." Terrence J. MacTaggart, Ph.D., author of LEADING CHANGE "[A]n informative and insightful examination of professional ethics at the intense intersection of higher education, state government, and journalism. [Diamond] deftly weaves his personal plight into poignant stories of competing loyalties and the consequences of honoring your principles." Bob Steele, Ph.D., journalism ethicist and retired ethics institute director "Universities must commit themselves to high standards. PLEASE DELETE reminds us of that expectation--and the moral fortitude necessary from all levels of the organization to keep and protect the public trust." Karen Yelverton-Zamarripa, assistant vice chancellor, California State University

About the Author
PLEASE DELETE author John Diamond spent 22 years as a senior communications leader for universities in Maine, Arkansas, and Wisconsin. A former journalism professor at the University of Maine, Diamond was a panelist on MediaWatch, a weekly television program on Maine PBS that critiqued news coverage of current events. He also co-produced Inside Augusta with John Diamond, a documentary series on the inner workings of state government for which he won a national journalism award. As a journalist, his by-line has appeared in the Columbia Journalism Review, Washington Journalism Review, and The Washington Monthly. Before moving into higher education, Diamond served eight years in the Maine Legislature, including four years as House Majority Leader. In PLEASE DELETE, Diamond relies on thousands of pages of email, transcripts, financial records, and first-hand accounts to complete a puzzle that investigative reporters, state auditors, and prosecutors couldn’t—or wouldn’t—finish. As the University of Arkansas’ chief media relations officer, Diamond was present when leaders made some of the most unsettling decisions about how to handle the developing financial mismanagement scandal. After raising objections to his bosses’ actions, in August 2013 Diamond was abruptly fired—by text message. Weeks later, called to testify under oath at a state inquiry, he told of his superiors’ release of a whitewashed version of an internal review; their misleading responses to investigative auditors and news reporters; document shredding; and a pivotal meeting at which UA’s chancellor angrily directed staffers to “get rid of” a troublesome budget document containing information reporters had sought under Arkansas’s public records law. Recipient in 2013 of a national award for crisis communications, Diamond owns a consulting firm specializing in higher education communications and advocacy. He and his wife Marcia live on the Maine coast, which allows them to indulge their passions for the Red Sox and seafood.

You'll relate to this story and love the way it's told
By Clinton Colmenares
I could not stop reading "Please Delete." And when it was over, I wanted more.
John Diamond courageously writes, in great detail and with documentation, about corruption and scandal that is all too common in complex organizations -- not just higher ed, think about the banking industry, Enron, military cover ups and politics at every level. Leaders rise to power out of good-ol'-boy or good-ol'-girl networks, power leads to entitlement and hubris, staff get swept up in sweeping things under the rug.
Unfortunately, I've seen this happen first-hand. Maybe you have, too. If so, you'll relate to every page, as the unscrupulous run amok and the voices of ethics and reason get drummed out.
"Please Delete" should be required reading in public relations, crisis communication and executive leadership. It's a playbook for what not to do, and it illustrates what every PR professional and leader knows: communications reflects an organization's culture, it doesn't create the culture, and no amount of spin will right a wrong.
John goes beyond recounting a scandal; he tells a compelling story. You get to know the players, what motivates them, what leads to their actions -- incompetence, ignorance, blind trust or maliciousness. Some are sympathetic, some make your blood boil, and some make you wonder if they can tie their own shoes.
Read "Please Delete." You'll want to recommend it, too.

Kindle version is terrible - update
By luna16
Original review: DO NOT BUY THE KINDLE VERSION OF THIS BOOK. The spacing is terrible. If I can manage to read it, I'll update my review based on the book. Don't you guys pay attention to details.

Updated review: I finally received a Kindle version that I could read, and then I could not stop reading it. What a story! It took real courage for Mr. Diamond to write about this experience. It saddens me to say I'm not surprised by any of it.

Transnational Litigation in Comparative Perspective: Theory & Application, by Stephen McCaffrey, Thomas Main

Transnational Litigation in Comparative Perspective: Theory and Application is the only casebook that examines the principal issues in transnational litigation from a comparative perspective. Each chapter focuses on a particular core problem that all legal systems must address. The first half of each chapter is devoted to exploring the theoretical context of the issue, thereby enabling students to appreciate the complexity of the problem and to see how achieving a resolution requires balancing competing interests. The second part of each chapter then focuses on how different systems deal with these challenges. Topics covered include protective measures, personal jurisdiction, forum non conveniens, forum selection clauses, state immunity, state doctrine, service of process, gathering evidence abroad, choice of law, and recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments.

Distinctive Features
*Uses a comparative approach that better prepares future lawyers for international litigation that may be initiated in countries other than the U.S.
*Offers a hypothetical at the beginning of each chapter to introduce the fundamental issue; the hypotheticals raise questions that are diagnostic rather than prescriptive, leading to many "right" answers
*Accommodates different types of courses--professors who employ a less theoretical approach can use the hypotheticals to ground class discussions
*Considers issues unique to arbitration as they arise in connection with the various topics studied
