About the Author

Andrew Baum was appointed Professor of Land Management at the Henley Business School, University of Reading, in 1989 and is now Professor of Real Estate Investment at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of St John's College, Cambridge.

Nick Nunnington is Head of Business Development, specialising in corporate real estate and property asset management at Sheffield Hallam University.

Needs improvements!

First of all I review this book from an experimented AdWords user (Certified AdWords) perspective so if you are a beginner you'll find this book better than myself but there are better books for beginners like Brad Geddes book who is the only book I highly recommend at this moment.
Now back to the book, like someone else said before me this book is good (not as good as I thought) but very sloppily put together with lots of white spaces. I read this book on my Kindle and the first 65% of this book it was somehow useless to me. The most important part imho is Part 2: Customers and Part 3: Cashflow.
What I dislike the most is when the author is telling you something very interesting and when you'll expect to give the "wow" idea/thing he just move on on a different subject ... AdWords is very complex thing now and what I wanted were more practical strategies with more examples and powerful arguments that will back up his vision.
The main idea of the book is "watch the money" and keep your eyes close to conversions and ROI because AdWords can work but you must achieve profitability with it not just paying for clicks.

It. Just. Makes. Sense.

I started a position managing an AdWords account June 29, 2015 for an eCommerce company with no previous AdWords experience, albeit a solid internet marketing background.

I was scrambling when I was offered the job, trying to learn everything I could get my hands on. I took classes on Lynda.com, Udemy.com, called around different agencies, picking their brains. You name it, I did it. Failure is never an option for me.

I can easily and comfortably state, that for me personally, I dominated the learning curve of AdWords in a matter of 1 month after reading this book twice in a weekend. I still go back to it on my kindle and kindle cloud to reference sections I've bookmarked. I've memorized certain sections.

Lynda and Udemy laid the groundwork for learning terminology and getting comfortable in the space, but The AdWords Bible for eCommerce, plain and simple, took my AdWords AND business skills and perspectives to a higher level of thinking as well as implementing, of which, a lot of businesses never even reach throughout the lifespan of their business.

David hits the nail on the head here and I was hard-pressed to find something I didn't agree with him on from a logical standpoint.

While earning my Bachelor's Degree in Business & Economics from Ursinus College, I took a course called Econometrics. If I could ever go back to school, I would base my thesis on the mathematics of two values discussed in this book because of how important they are when managing an AdWords account as a profit center as well as managing one's business in general.

David is on the forefront of this industry and while I felt like I was being sold a bit throughout the book on himself as an AdWords manager, the book was undeniably and insurmountably helpful to me. The ROI I'm going to receive and the business I'm working for has already began to receive from reading it is worth many times over the measly $19.99 I paid for it. It. Just. Makes. Sense.

While Google is constantly making additions to AdWords and while there are many advanced AdWords techniques David hasn't delved into such as AdWords Scripts, I still strongly believe, at least in my lifetime, that the values David preaches the importance of throughout this book will always be fundamentally sound.

It's All About Results

At first glance, Google AdWords seems simple, straightforward and eminently fair. The ads are short, consisting of one headline of 25 characters, two additional text lines each containing up to 35 characters, and a display URL of 35 characters.

John Wannamaker, a pioneer in marketing, reportedly said, "Half the money I spend on advertising is wasted; the trouble is I don't know which half." Unlike mass media advertising where you pay upfront, regardless of results, with Google AdWords, you only pay when someone clicks on your ad. But what happens next?

David Rothwell, author of Clicks, Customers, Cash Flow - AdWords Marketing That Pays, has written a powerful, insightful and instructional guide to making AdWords Pay.

According to Mr. Rothwell, the first thing you must understand is that clicks on their own don't count. Actually he goes a bit further, conversions on their own don't count. In his view, the only thing that counts is results - does your AdWords campaign produce a profit?

Before going deeper into what the book is about, I would like to share one other bit of advice from David. This book is not for beginners. David assumes you have a good working knowledge of AdWords. This is a very advanced information. If you are starting from zero, get a book about the basics.

In the book, Mr. Rothwell goes into great detail about what makes a profitable campaign. You cannot focus on the ad, the clicks or any other single component. You must consider each and every step. That includes - 1) the right message 2) reaching the right person 3) on the right web property 4) in the right geographic location 5) at the right time 6) on the right device 7) for the right amount of money.

David covers it all. The how and the what and the why. One particular line I love from the book, "Data beats opinion. We test everything."

There are countless real world examples, screen shots, hard data, specific examples of what works and what doesn't. It is a complete guide. It's all there - it will require lots of work. "Google takes advantage of ignorance all the time, and a little knowledge about AdWords and how it works is usually a dangerous thing."

A good question is what makes Mr. Rothwell the authority on this subject. It is very simple. He has spent some �24 million (US $38 million) for clients on ad spend. Now he only takes clients on a success basis. That is they only pay him a fee based on the results he delivers. And in his own words, he has gone from unemployable to permanently employable. He has mastered AdWords - his criteria for success is making a profit from AdWords - not just clicks, not just conversions, but most of all, profit.

If you are looking for an authoritative guide to making AdWords pay, then look no further.

No army went to war in 1914 ready to conduct trench warfare operations. This volume examines how the British went about inventing and manufacturing new weaponry such as hand grenades, rifle grenades and trench mortars when no body of knowledge about trench warfare munitions existed. It also examines how tactics were developed for these new munitions. Based on new research, this is the first book to discuss the complexity of invention and manufacture of novel weapons such as the Mills grenade and the Stokes mortar, and to consider the relationship between technical design and operational tactics on the ground. In so doing the book presents a different model of the trench warfare conducted by the British Expeditionary Force on the Western Front, and also provides a blueprint to understanding the relationship between technology and tactics applicable to all types of weapons and warfare.

Anthony Saunders is an independent scholar and the author of four books on military history, most recently Hitler's Atlantic Wall and Trench Warfare 1850-1950. He worked previously in the Principal Directorate of Patents at the Ministry of Defence.

Figuring Out How to Beat the Trenches

'Saunders, author of several works on weapons and tactics in the twentieth century, opens by noting that “No army went to war in 1914 expecting to conduct trench warfare . . . and consequently no army was equipped for such an eventuality.” It is the effort to find the proper equipment for trench warfare that is the theme of this work. Although focused on the British Army, Saunders does pay a good deal of attention to developments by other armies as he discusses existing munitions suitable for trench operations, the development of the “bureaucracy of invention,” the engineering problems of trench warfare, and the prodigious growth of military engineering forces duing the war. He then concentrates on two weapons, grenades and mortars, reaching back into the seventeenth century, no less, and shows how these evolved during the war and how these affected tactics. Saunders concludes with a look at how innovations affected the conduct of the war and helped restore mobility. An excellent book for anyone interested in the problem of trench warfare, the development of modern munitions, or the Great War.'

Not quite!

This book is a real and living illustration as to why newspaper columnists should perhaps think twice before attempting a venture into the real world of books .Gill writes to a formula ,if you've read one of his columns you've read them all. Self obsessed,thin and boring this book would have best remained on the shelves.Having knocked out two dismal and embarrassing novels ,he has obviously decided to try and redeem himself with this dreadful mishmash ,but sadly ,I think he needn't have bothered.

Truth( not fiction) this book also became a prediction.

I first read this book while I was in Southeast Asia in late 1967 or early 1968. It was a shocker. I was living this book "in the flesh" even as I read it. Originally titled, "Sarkhan" it could easily have been Viet Nam, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, or Burma. While I wasn't a major player I experienced much of what was written by Msrs. Lederer and Burdick. I was stationed in northern Thailand, had a Hong Kong Passport, and spent many days aloft with Air America (CIA) flying to train Laotian and Cambodian troops on repair and maintenance of T-28 aircraft armament systems. I only wore a uniform while on base. This book seemed to have vanished from the bookshelves for many years (actually the U. S. Government had it removed.) First printed as "Sarkhan" in the fall of 1965, it didn't show up again until it was reprinted as "The Deceptive American" in 1977. I didn't run across a copy until December of 1998 in the Rockford, IL Public Library. Of and on I searched for "Sarkhan" for more than 30 years. For anyone who is a student of the Viet Nam series of conflicts this book summarizes the deception of the American public that took place under both the Johnson and Nixon Administrations. While still a novel, it would fall awfully close to "fact" if a few of the names were changed. I enjoyed it the first time I read it and my suspicions (concerning our Government pulling it off the shelves in the interest of security) were confirmed in the Preface of the 1977 version. Found at last-Missing Book Reappears Under New Title!

I first read this book under the title of "Sarkhan" as a college student in 1970. I was so impressed with the book that I have told friends about it for the last 30 years. This was the most insightful of the books about Vietnam available at a time when everyone was terribly concerned about what was developing there. As a political science major I was particularly interested in the steps that drew us into the Vietnam war. I have been frustrated for years about what happened to this book and why it literally disappeared from existence. If you are a history or political science buff this is a must read and if you have not read these authors other book"The Ugly American" I suggest you read it also. The new title,"The Deceptive American",may be more accurate than the original.

I am a third year med student. I found this book to be extremely useful during my anesthesia rotation. It is concise and easy to read. I did read a recommended text but this book was so much more succinct and better prepared me for questions the docs asked and discussions we had. Highly recommend.

Nature in Translation is an ethnographic exploration in the cultural politics of the translation of knowledge about nature. Shiho Satsuka follows the Japanese tour guides who lead hikes, nature walks, and sightseeing bus tours for Japanese tourists in Canada's Banff National Park and illustrates how they aspired to become local "nature interpreters" by learning the ecological knowledge authorized by the National Park. The guides assumed the universal appeal of Canada’s magnificent nature, but their struggle in translating nature reveals that our understanding of nature—including scientific knowledge—is always shaped by the specific socio-cultural concerns of the particular historical context. These include the changing meanings of work in a neoliberal economy, as well as culturally-specific dreams of finding freedom and self-actualization in Canada's vast nature. Drawing on nearly two years of fieldwork in Banff and a decade of conversations with the guides, Satsuka argues that knowing nature is an unending process of cultural translation, full of tensions, contradictions, and frictions. Ultimately, the translation of nature concerns what counts as human, what kind of society is envisioned, and who is included and excluded in the society as a legitimate subject.
