About the Author
Matthew D. Selekman, MSW, LCSW, is a family therapist and addictions counselor in private practice and Director of Partners for Collaborative Solutions, an international family therapy training and consulting firm in Evanston, Illinois. He is an Approved Supervisor with the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. Mr. Selekman served as the invited Henry Maier Practitioner-in-Residence at the School of Social Work of the University of Washington and is a three-time recipient of the Walter S. Rosenberry Award from Children’s Hospital Colorado for his significant contributions to the fields of psychiatry and behavioral sciences. The author of numerous professional articles and seven books, including Working with High-Risk Adolescents: An Individualized Family Therapy Approach and Collaborative Brief Therapy with Children, Mr. Selekman consults worldwide to schools and treatment programs serving adolescents and their families. Dr Vern Neufeld Redekop is an associate professor in the Department of Conflict Studies at Saint Paul University in Ottawa, Ontario. He has written numerous articles, papers, and contributed chapters on conflict studies and resolution, and has published three books on the subject.

Dr Jean-Francois Rioux is an associate professor in the Department of Conflict Studies at Saint Paul University. He's written extensively on conflict studies, Canadian foreign policy, and armed conflicts, including two books in French and one in English.

Definitely a book to read.

I haven't read a novel like this in a very long time. Part historical novel as it gives some insight as to the Seminoles in 1855. Just a little. The heroine runs away from a sadistic army colonel who has raped her and wants to use her. She goes out to sea during a storm only to be rescued by a Seminole who has some dominating characteristic but treats her with respect and kindness. Quite an interesting storyline. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Love how the characters develop. I couldn't but this book down until I read it at one sitting.

I LOVED Yahola and Alika's story!! It was beautiful, thoughtful and very special. I truly enjoyed the Native American aspect, and how sex wasn't just an "act", it had meaning and power~ it truly was very special. I look forward to reading more by this author.

Amazing TWINS book

Marcy Dermansky's debut novel - Twins - is an amazing piece of twin fiction. Although not a twin herself, Dermansky has managed to capture what many other authors don't even bother to try: A real understanding of the complex relationship between identical twins!

The story is fast paced, very original and occasionally disturbing while managing to be alternately funny and quite a tear-jerker. (I must admit to using up half a box of tissues crying by the end of the novel - which I read in one day).

As an identical twin myself, (and twin-owner of a popular internet site for twins called Twins Realm) I was very pleasantly surprised to find the two main characters (identical twins Chloe and Sue) portrayed with real depth and understanding.

Often fiction writers use twin characters only for the convenience of their storylines, while continuing to perpetuate the common stereotypes (like `good' and `evil' twins), but Dermansky's tale is a much more realistic, sympathetic, and in-depth look at the complexity of twin experiences; it offers unique insight into the struggles faced by identical twins with issues of identity and self-determination.

A thoroughly enjoyable (and informative) novel, for twins and non-twins alike - definitely worth a read!!!

Witty and touching

I typically have little patience with coming-of-age stories or the trevails of psychodramatic teenagers, but Twins slowly wore away at my cynicism as it drew me in.

You might want to shake these girls and tell them to get their act together, but Ms. Dermansky's voice is so witty and winning that you'll be anxiously rooting for them to find happiness in the end. And I have to confess, cynic that I am, I found myself with a lump in my throat by the final chapter. It probably won't lead me to seek out other novels about the trials of teenagers, but if I had to spend 300 pages with a couple of neurotic, troubled teenage girls, I'm glad it was *these* teenage girls, and I'm glad I had this author as my charming guide.

I loved this book!

First of all, this is a great read. The book is satisfying on so many

different levels. It flows like butter. On a purely soap-opera/voyeur

level, it explores the lives of these blond twin adolescent girls, their

sex lives, and their ambition-lives. But the way in which the sex and

the various ambitions are handled takes this story deeper than a soap.

It's a soap and a literary novel rolled into one.

The voices are engaging and real. The details about the girls'

secret/inner lives ring true, yet also surprise and generally engage

you. Marcy Dermansky is an incredible writer. I've read some of her

short stories (in journals) and her language is always dead on precise.

If you look at the language closely you'll see there's not one wasted

word. Each sentence is doing so much work, evoking such subtleties of

mind and mood, bringing the story to life. The book is funny and manages

to be uplifting at the end, but the writer's vision can also go dark.

She's not afraid to examine loneliness, anger and failure. I should also

mention how original and quirky the voice is. You definitely won't have

read anything quite like it unless you've read her other work.

It's the sort of book you read and then give to all your friends and

they give to two friends and so on and so on. I'm a woman in my 30's. In

case anyone cares.

During the 64 years of Qianlong's rule, China's population more than doubled, its territory increased by one-third, its cities flourished, and its manufactures - tea, silk, porcelain - were principal items of international commerce. Based on original Chinese and Manchu-language sources, and drawing on the latest scholarship, this is the biography of the man who, in presiding over imperial China's last golden epoch, created the geographic and demographic framework of modern China. This accessible account describes the personal struggles and public drama surrounding one of the major political figures of the early modern age, with special consideration given to the emperor's efforts to rise above ethnic divisions and to encompass the political and religious traditions of Han Chinese, Mongols, Tibetans, Turks, and other peoples of his realm. About the Author

Mark C. Elliott is the Mark Schwartz Professor of Chinese and Inner Asian History in the Department of East Asian Langauges and Civilizations at Harvard University.� Professor Elliott's interest in East Asia began at Yale, where he earned his BA (History, 1981) and MA (East Asian Studies, 1983). After several years of study and archival research in Taiwan, the PRC, and Japan, he earned his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley in 1993, specializing in the history of the last imperial dynasty, the Qing. A leading figure in what is sometimes called the "New Qing History," he is among the very few historians in the United States trained in the use of Manchu-language sources, upon which his first book, The Manchu Way: The Eight Banners and Ethnicity in Late Imperial China (Stanford, 2001) is largely based.�� He is� currently at work on a new book examining the connections between the Manchu empire and modern China.

Concise and entertaining, excellent resource for teachers

This highly entertaining and compact book is by far the best overview on Qing, China for teaching. Elliott is masterful in taking a seemingly dull topic (I am typically not a big fan of late imperial China) and bringing it to life in a non-intimidating way. This book uses the backdrop of a biography of the Qianlong emperor to map out everything you need to know about the 18th century (Qianlong reigned over sixty years), including summarizing for a general audience the major debates in the field. There are no characters in this book and explains for the layperson on how to pronounce many of the Chinese names used. The back has an annotated bibliography for further reading. (Good for qualifying exam preparation!)

Everything from ritual life, to population growth and domestic politics, to trade, to the tribute system and Qing China in the world, and the British, is discussed in here, along with lots of little stories (good for attention-grabbing in lecture) and exciting new research in the field. For example, there's detailed discussion of the emperor's extensive imperial tours in China, the relationship with his wives, Qing consolidation of borders and border conflicts (including Tibet and Xinjiang), and discussion of Qianlong's obsession in preserving Manchu ways of life (clothing, language, hunting, martial skills, etc). There's also a great map for teaching Qing China borders (not that different from the current Chinese borders, minus Mongolia and Taiwan) with a map of the US overlaying it. Visually, one can see that the two countries are approximately the same size. Fascinating stuff to use for lecture!

A Good Introduction

This book is at best a good introduction to the Qianlong emperor's reign. Whole books have been written about several aspects of the reign. The author himself mentions Perdue's book on the Qing conquest of central Asia (which I've bought but not had time to read). Alan Peyrifitte has written _ The Immobile Empire _ about the MacCartney mission (which I did read and heartily recommend). This book includes many paintings by Catiglione who's another topic in his own right. So, as I said, it's at best a good introduction to the period. But it does do that very well and even includes very topical information.
By far the most moving aspect of the book was the portrayal of the emperor's personal life, such as his lifelong grief over the death of his first wife, or his doting on his last daughter. It shows yet again that these people were indeed people with loves and losses of their own.

Imperial thumbs up!

A very good book, fleshed out with loads of interesting detail and broad context which helps to put things in perspective, especially against major events in western history. I also like the fact that it is well organized, so it can serve as a quick reference book as well as a relaxing and engaging read. Not a mean feat for what some may consider to be a dry subject.
