About the Author
Michael R. Adams is a master mariner, certified STCW instructor, retired U.S. Coast Guard commander, and current member of the Florida Bar. During his two decades in the Coast Guard, he served in the cutters Absecon, Boutwell, Dependable, Midgett, Steadfast, and Ute, progressing from deck watch officer to commanding officer. He also served as navigator of the barque USCGC Eagle. After his Coast Guard service, he spent 11 years as captain of the large oil spill response vessel Delaware Responder with brief intervals as captain of the California Responder, Maine Responder, and Virginia Responder. He has taught STCW courses, including BRM, at locations from Maine to Miami and is author of the book OCEAN STATION (Nor'easter Press, 2010).

Solid but not revolutionary

This book has good information and covers the necessary topics, but I don't think it has anything revolutionary or unique. More information on sleep cycles, watch rotation and the reality of shipboard operations would have been beneficial.

Johns Hopkins University sociologist Cherlin (Public and Private Families) analyzes "the profound changes" that have occurred in American family life, especially during the past half century. Although heterosexual marriage as the bedrock institution for raising children remains a strong cultural value, it is challenged by the increasing stress placed on individualism and self-fulfillment. The book presents a comprehensive historical overview of marriage and family in the U.S. and compares American behavior with that of people in other Western countries (Americans have the highest levels of moving from partner to partner). In light of relationship instability, the author suggests that children are likely to fare better in a single parent family than in a step-family, a structure that tends to be unstable. While Cherlin delineates the stress points created by the conflicting values of marriage and individualism, he offers few suggestions for dealing with the problems identified. To suggest that the "marriage merry-go-round" can be "slowed down" by not starting or ending relationships so quickly is to restate the problem, not offer insight for its resolution.

Bottom line: great read.

The Marriage Go Round will shift the way you think about America's most hotly debated institution. Unlike so many treatments of the subject in the popular press, which often seem to be little more than political pamphleteering, Professor Cherlin's book does not easily yield a liberal or conservative label.

Its main ideas are big and non-intuitive -- the way I like 'em. It's got the "wow on every page" factor that Malcolm Gladwell's books offer. But unlike Gladwell, who's a journalist who summarizes other people's research, Professor Cherlin's the real deal: an academic who's spent decades in the trenches studying this stuff.

So what does Marriage Go Round tell us? First of all, Americans marry and divorce way more than people from other countries do. And our high rate of "relationship turnover" causes extreme agita. In other words, it may not be great to get divorced, but it's even worse to cycle in and out of relationships, particularly when children are involved. Instability is worse than stability, even the "stability" of being alone.

The book also talks about the schizophrenic attitude Americans have towards marriage. On the one hand, we idealize it. (It's crucial to marry in order to live a full life.) On the other hand, we idealize our freedom and independence. (If a marriage isn't giving us what we need, it should be abandoned.) We embrace both ideals without realizing they contradict each other. But they do. And when they collide, it drives us over the bend.

So what should we do? How do we "get off" the Marriage Go Round? Here, Cherlin's advice seems apropos for our time: we need to slow down! Stop hopping in and out of relationships. Take the time to figure yourself out first. (If you've ever listened to Loveline, this is what Adam Carolla tells basically every caller!)

Also, for what it's worth, I like the rough pages as well. Maybe if the reviewer below had actually read what's on the pages instead of grousing about their consistency (or whatever), he would have gotten more out of the book. :)

The author focuses on 2 themes here - the high value Americans place on marriage and the high value we place on independence. His main point is that these values are rather contradictory. He sees that as explaining our rather unique approach to marriage in the industrialized world - i.e., the marriage churn, or merry go-round, of cohabit-marry-divorce-repeat.

The big issue here, of course, is the effect on the kids. In fact, Cherlin goes so far as to claim that a single-parent family is healthier than one where the kids are exposed to multiple parental partners and the lack of stability that involves.

Cherlin covers the topic from all angles, touching on history, class, race, religion, mobility, globalization - all the important pieces of the puzzle. He also has an incredibly clear and lucid style. In fact, it's almost impossible to misunderstand what he's trying to get across. He really takes his time to make sure you hear and understand his argument.

He also really knows his stuff. As another reviewer pointed out, we're not just dealing with another Malcolm Gladwell here. At the same time, his mastery of the details doesn't keep him from putting the pieces together and coming up with some very insightful and thought-provoking explanations and connections.

One of the editorial reviews slighted the book for not really providing a solution. Cherlin does mention a few ideas but, no, he really doesn't offer the magic, all-encompassing fix that a lot of people expect for issue books like this these days.

I actually admire him for this. This topic is way too complex to admit of any silver bullet. I think it's enough that he points out the problem and analyzes it so incisively. That's the first step. I'm not even sure that we, as a culture, have even really gotten our minds around the idea that, yes, there really is a problem here.

Bringing a much-needed light to bear on American marriages

I just picked this book up because I was curious about what the author might have to say about "The State of Marriage and Family in America Today". After reading the back and the flaps, I bought it straight up. I had never heard of Andrew Cherlin before, but I looked him up and was favorably impressed by his credentials. More importantly, I appreciate his reasonable examination of marriage and family, two very high-emotion topics. He discusses marriage from many different angles, all comparing the pulls of two pillars of American society: individualism and traditional marriage. It seems that every page has fascinating tidbits and thoughts on it!

And let me just say that I for one very much like the old-fashioned rough pages, and that they didn't present any difficulty at all for me in reading this excellent book.

Enjoyable, informative and useful. Sam Leith neatly expounds over two millennia of writing (as the subtitle says, from Aristotle to Obama) on rhetoric, the subject that should not have been dropped from the syllabus. He cites examples from both sides of the Atlantic -- helpful for insular Americans or Britons. His acerbic wit, coupled with a fondness for vulgarity, help make the book "accessible" for those who fear serious writing. This can be irritating, but I did find myself guffawing out loud once or twice. This is really a review of the literature, but it is more than just a quick romp in the outskirts of the subject. If you want to explore further, Leith recommends a handful of essential reference works, which is most useful to a newcomer like myself.

The best introduction to rhetoric that I have ever read

The author provides a succinct and very readable introduction to one of the most important subjects of society, that of persuasion through classical rhetoric. He begins with a brief though enlightening history of the origins and development rhetoric, then proceeds to describe the types and elements illustrated by some of the greatest orators in history. The book is excellent for the beginner yet informative for the accomplished. It is enlightening, enjoyable and well worth the price.

If the true meaning of the word "rhetoric" is to be liberated from the pejorative prison in which it has been locked for a few generations, this book might just do it. With wit, humor, and superb examples, the author demonstrates how the concept of rhetoric is instrinsic to the very essence of language itself. I can't recommend this book highly enough to all who love language and its myriad expressions.

BRILLIANT BOOK!!! THANK YOU BECCA AND KRISTA!!!

OMG!!! I got to say first that the Addicted Series is my favourite book series of all times!!! I absolutely LOVE all the characters, I ADORE all the stories and i never had a book making me go from laughing super hard to bawling the next.

All that being said, I was a bit hesitant with Thrive, once i knew that it would span the same time as Kiss the Sky and Hothouse Flower so I didn't know what to expect. And I only had one word after i finished: AMAZING!!

Since the first book I feel like Lily was a gift given to me by Krista and Becca, and in this book I was so proud of her, of her growth, her building confidence, of her standing up of herself and being there for her sisters. The book opened up with a bang for me because that first scene of Lily saying what she wanted for her 21st birthday had me in fits of laugh!!! Lo also grew leaps and bounds on this one, although the set backs were heartbreaking! ***SPOILER*** The dinner scene at the Calloways by the end of the books were Lo yells that he'll never have babies broke my heart and I cried right along with Lil.

Better than ever

LiLo are back and their soul wrenching battle with addiction isn't over yet. We see new found strengths in Lily and get torn apart by Lo's desperate battle against self loathing. The characters are as familiar as family yet bring new challenges for one another. Krista and Becca Ritchie are never content with static charcters and once again deliver a dynamic, thought provoking and hypnotic read. In Review: Thrive (Addicted #2.5) by Krista & Becca Ritchie

I've been mulling over what to say about this book without spoiling it, but still doing it justice, since I finished it well over a week ago. I also haven't stopped thinking about these characters and this story since I finished. I think I've got it, but just realize that no matter what I say, I can't possibly make you understand how amazing and powerful this story is.

It's been quite awhile since we got a new story focused mainly on Lily and Lo. Sure, they were always in the background (and sometimes foreground) of the spinoff Calloway sisters novels, but I couldn't help but wonder what was happening to them while the other characters took center stage. Well, the answer is A LOT. And that's all I'm going to tell you. Don't fool yourself into thinking that there's not much story untold, even if you've read Kiss the Sky and Hothouse Flower. Because I can't stress just how wrong you are if you think that. The good, the bad, the ugly. The sweet, the sexy, the heartbreaking. Thrive tells it all.

Thrive delves deeper into addiction and all the effects it has on a person and those in their life, but it does it in a way that, while heavy, wasn't unbearable. Yes there were moments that had me in tears, but there were also the little moments that made me laugh and swoon. The Harry Potter references were plentiful and I grinned every time, particularly over "alohomora." I loved each and every single one of the geeky references. Because, let's face it, Lily and Lo are geeks and I effing love them because of it. I love Lily's awkwardness and Lo's raw sexual power. When Lo calls her "love," I melt every single time. Seriously, these two are so OTP it almost hurts me.

As was true with every other book in this series, the secondary characters play a huge role. As I've read (and LOVED) both Kiss the Sky and Hothouse Flower, I was fascinated by reading all the events from Lily and Lo's POVs this time. Those two definitely knew a lot more, a lot longer, than anyone thought. I had truthfully forgotten just how much I loved Lily and Lo, as the last books focused on Rose and Connor and Daisy and Ryke. But, they really are the perfect couple. Yes, they're co-dependent almost to a fault, but they make my heart sing when they're together. But, each and every one of these characters, these couples, holds a special place in my heart and I could never, ever pick a favorite. They each bring something so special, so uniquely them, to the table. I can't imagine this series without every single one of them just as they are. Each new installment in their stories gives me more reasons to love them even more than I did after finishing the previous book.

I had very, very high expectations for Thrive and they were exceeded. What's a stronger word for exceeded? Because that's what they were. I highlighted about half the book. I couldn't even narrow down my favorite parts to include them in my review. Just know they were plentiful.

Earlier today I was writing up a fun survey post and one of the topics was "most recommended books." Clearly the Addicted and Calloway Sisters series hit the list. Like I said on that post, if you're a fan of new adult books with grit and unforgettable characters and you're NOT reading this series yet, you really need to reevaluate your life choices.

When I think this series can't possibly get any better, Krista and Becca find a way to blow me away and make me feel things I didn't know I could feel. Then they leave me wanting more. And boy, do I ever want more after finishing Thrive. How long until Addicted to After All...?

There are only three books left in this series and I'm already dreading it ending. Regardless of how it all shakes out, it's going to really suck to give these characters up. This is a series I'll be rereading for a very long time to come.

Black Widow is another fast moving and terrific novel from J Robert Kennedy. It involves most of the favorite characters with Dylan Kane, the Delt� Force and the CIA operatives that are all involved in a present day scenario that will have other readers not wanting to put the book down until the end which has twists and turns that keep the reader guessing what is next! Kudos to the author for another page tuner

Awesome...unbelievable that this fiction plot turns out to be what we are seening on CNN and FOX...it is real. Thanks Robert for the" wake up call" to get inside the minds and charcter of the ISIS...our real enemy may be us if we do not start taking these dudes for real! New York could have been Paris, and still may be. Robert, you are doing us the honor of showing what may happen, unless we begin to stand firm against this enemy. Look what happened in Mali a few days ago, and more will come...stand tall America! Former Peace Corps Volunteer, Anita Datar gave her life in Mali, the only American to die in this recent attack, there will be more!
I could not put your book down...Thanks!

A Scary Storyline that Could Easily Become Reality

I have read, and enjoyed, all of Mr. Kennedy's books in the James Acton, Delta Force and Dylan Kane series. I would have really enjoyed The Black Widow if it didn't point out so clearly how easy an attack on U.S. soil can be accomplished. It also describes those who would generate the attack as more intelligent and organized than most Americans would believe.and with a motivation that we can't understand. Certainly there are some fictional liberties taken to make the story flow but this book lays out a scenario that could be more reality than fiction. Something I think every American should read.

Useful Guide

Irritating map typo on p 45: in place of the map of the Vermont/Massachusetts border, they have the map of the Massachusetts/Conneticut border, the very same map that is reprinted again in its proper place on p. 127. Other than that, a useful comprehensive guide to these sections of the A.T.

Crisp, gripping and heartbreaking

In crisp language through carefully built scenes, O'Neil takes us at a breakneck pace through a storied life full of bad choices, regret and the overall absurdity life throws your way when drugs come into play. O'Neil notices the important details and has a way of anchoring us in a scene through rich description, amping up the pace with tension and then slyly ripping our hearts out.
