Normally I don't buy "licks" books, but I took a chance with this one and was very pleasantly surprised. In a nutshell, here are the pros and minor cons (from my perspective):

Pros:
* the licks are real transcriptions, not simply 'in the style of' licks found in many books
* licks are organized into minor, major, dominant, minor ii-Vs, major ii-V's with chords above each bar to help your analysis
* there are many licks (over 600?), each ascribed to a particular player (Tal, Pat, Wes, Jimmy R., Joe P.)
Cons:
* no references given for each lick so you can't go to the 'source' to hear the nuances of how a lick is played
* no analysis of licks

There are several licks per page in musical notation only (i.e., no TAB). Personally, I like omitting the TAB - it forces me to read and to experiment with different positions. I try to focus on 3 or 4 licks per day, with an emphasis on analyzing each lick to 'discover' what the player was thinking - how do the starting/ending notes relate to the chord?, what are the arpeggio shapes underlying a lick? - etc. I use the book as a way to wind down my practice sessions - a few nuggets at the end of practice is a nice way to finish. My best experiences have come with licks that I couldn't readily explain ('why did he play *that* over a D minor7?') - forcing me out of my comfort/knowledge zone and learning what else is possible.

Over the years I have transcribed, and then forgotten, innumerable licks - so rote memorization of licks wasn't my goal in buying this book. However, deconstructing licks into their core components (underlying arppegios/shapes, scale choices, starting/ending notes) is something I *can* remember and use in my solos. And, instead of me sitting down and randomly listening to dozens of albums by these artists, the author has saved me/us a lot of time by doing this and writing out transcriptions of licks that caught his attention as a professional player, including the key and chords over which the licks were played (essential for one's analysis).

Overall, this is one of the more useful books I have bought (and I've bought almost all of them since the 70s!). I really appreciated the author's effort in amassing these licks.

Beautiful jazz lines!

For me it is being very useful to be able to imitate the greats. A better learning alternative would be doing your own transcriptions but this is just faster :)

The only thing I'm missing is the references to the songs/records from which the lines have been extracted from.

Lots to work with

Very comprehensive, although licks can be difficult to understand in context of song. Otherwise, very satisfied with product. Would recommend to others.
