About the Author
Roger K. Allen, Ph.D.—author, consultant, coach, teacher Roger offers a rare set of skills to help people do deep and transformative work to reach their full potential in both their personal lives and businesses. Using his engaging style, Roger has facilitated thousands of workshops and seminars, making an impact on tens of thousands of people and dozens of businesses by creating a safe and yet honest environment from which to elicit high levels of personal accountability and achievement. In 1980, Roger founded and served as President of The Human Development Institute in which he provided thousands of hours of individual, marriage and family therapy to a diverse client population, supervised the work of other professionals, and managed team of 12 full and part-time staff, plus a large volunteer network. During his full-time tenure with HDI, Roger also created experiential programs in personal empowerment and interpersonal relationships which were taught in several cities, hundreds of times, and were known for their life-changing impact on thousands of people. A very powerful story that will touch your heart & teach your soul

This is a very powerful and compelling story - it will touch your heart and will teach you a better way of living. You will be moved by this story - it will make you smile and it will also move you to tears.

The writing style and story line reminds me of Og Mandino's books. If you love any of his books you will surely love this one.

While the story is emotionally moving it is also provides many teaching moments.

The plot revolves around Hal, a man totally committed to building his business and unable to listen to or communicate effectively with others. His relationships are all superficial. In a dark moment of his life, quite by accident he has a chance encounter with a man who gently guides Hal to a better way of living.

Hal was full of anger, ran away from confrontations or problems, and was always blaming others when things did not go smoothly in his life. He deeply wanted love and understanding but his actions pushed people away. He could not and would not face his contribution to the reality he was creating.

The story is very captivating. I found it difficult to put the book down and was constantly looking forward to getting back to the story. I was hooked on finding out how it ended. Just like Og Mandino's books,there are a couple of surprises in the ending.

The story is completely fictional. I rarely read fiction but this was a real pleasure. There are numerous parts that I underlined and highlighted. The story is great but in my mind the lessons are even more important. The story makes the lessons easy to see. Everyone will get something from this book.

I will go back many times and review the lessons from this book. It is really a great blueprint for learning to live your life from the inside out - to live life at the highest level.

There are many valuable tools in the book - Stop -Look - Listen - Choose is just one. When faced with a "key moment" we need to Stop - be aware of what is happening, Look - notice your feelings without acting on them, Listen to your inner voice and Choose - what choices can you make that will give you what you really want. As a general rule we react emotionally based on our belief system. We often lash out, choose the victim role or blame others. This book will definitely open your eyes to some of your destructive behavior. If you internalize the lessons you will look at life from a different perspective.

Get a copy of this book and read it. Then go back and study it. Write down the lessons and the tools and start to implement them in your life. Then tell all your friends to do the same thing.

I know this book will change lots of lives. Read it and implement the lessons and you will be as changed as Hal.

The Hero's Choice

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The characters are well developed and believable. What the main characters go through is so close to what many people are experiencing in real life right now, I had to keep reminding myself this is just a novel, not reality. I began the book during my daily public transportation commute but soon found 20-minute chunks of reading time were not sufficient. I finished the book on my third night because I could no longer stand to put it down. I loved the resolution and the plot. I'm ready for a sequel!

This captivating story describes how Hal Stratton, a successful entrepreneur and family man, suddenly finds his life falling apart for no apparent reason ...at least to him. His personal struggles are all too familiar for most of us. I found myself deeply absorbed in the book. It seemed only natural as I read the pages that I contrasted the key relationships in my own life to those experienced through the eyes and practices of Hal Stratton. This book gives brilliant perspective and hope that each of us, if we take a serious look inwardly, can learn the keys to greatly improve and maintain the essential associations of our lives. The author will have you really thinking! It's a fantastic book with many helpful and motivational insights learned in a beautiful story.

Jeff and Melanie Carpenter own and operate Zack Woods Herb Farm in Hyde Park, Vermont. They have recently co-authored the book,�The Organic Medicinal Herb Farmer�due out in the spring of 2015 published by Chelsea Green.

Jeff Carpenter has farming in his blood. Descended from generations of Vermont farmers, Jeff deepened his love and understanding of plants through an apprenticeship with Rosemary Gladstar and as the co-owner of Sage Mountain Herb Products. Since those early days, Jeff's work as a farmer, agricultural consultant, educator, and researcher has focused on the cultivation and marketing of medicinal herbs. Jeff also partners with Rosemary Gladstar in hosting the International Herb Symposium. His passion for the green� world is evident as he spends his days working in the fields and in the community.

Jeff and Melanie Carpenter own and operate Zack Woods Herb Farm in Hyde Park, Vermont. They have recently co-authored the book,�The Organic Medicinal Herb Farmer�due out in the spring of 2015 published by Chelsea Green.

Melanie Carpenter grew up at Sage Mountain under the loving tutelage of herbalist Rosemary Gladstar. It was there that Melanie started her first business, Sage Mountain Herb Products. Over the last twenty years, she has worked as a farmer, mother, community herbalist, and educator. In addition to her work as a farmer, Melanie serves on the board of directors of United Plant Saver and assists her family in directing the International Herb Symposium and New England Women’s Herbal Conference. Well balanced useful and practical guide

I truly do recommend this book. I am very impressed with how it is written. It is very well balanced.

There is some story telling to help emphasize a point or explain why they exercise a particular method, but every story has instructional value, which I really appreciate.

The technical component is appropriately sized and valuable. There is one section in one chapter where the numbers really get crunched. The in-the-weeds (as it were) business data numbers. It is enough for you to learn what you need to know for you to consider starting a medicinal herb farm, but it is kept in check so that the whole book doesn’t become a technical manual that imparts migraines on its readers.

Also, the encyclopedia-like section of the book is also appropriate and reasonably sized. What makes this section stand out is that it focuses on varieties of plants that the authors see marketable value in and each entry provides details harvesting, trying and caring for that plant as a medicinal herb, not just a plant in general.

Finally, I respect Jeff and Melanie because they acknowledge how their beliefs conflict with their business needs. For example, while speaking about a desire to stay permaculture design minded they also speak to their feeling that they cannot grow on their scale without a tractor. But don’t run away scoffing – read the book. They have a wonderful and respectful approach worth reading, understanding and considering.

I am a 22 year old with a wild dream of someday having my own medicinal herb farm, and this book is the most helpful tool I have yet to come across. It has made me feel like it is actually possible for someone so small to maybe, someday, be successful, and more importantly help support my community through ethically grown botanicals. I am so beyond thankful this book was made and that people like Jeff and Melanie Carpenter exist to give encouragement to people like me. You will not regret this purchase!!

Excellent

We have been considering starting an herbal farm and this book had the information that I needed. While this is an introductory book, the information provided is concise and wide ranging, and includes very practical advise and first hand experience. In addition, there are numerous pictures not just of herbs, but of life on the farm. The resource section will prove to be very useful as well. The book is printed on high quality glossy paper. Worth every penny!

OOPS! Useful and detailed, but it chaffes my paradigm...

I read through the first chapter, glanced at the others, started on the project in chapter one, then realized something. I use golive because I find the numbered column on the left side extremely useful. I'll bet this software if used to it's full capacity would be excellent in a production environment where you have several websites to build in a very short time. I don't have that affliction.
I also noticed, after dragging and dropping the component parts for the web page, INLINE STYLES IN THE CODE! WHAT? WHY?
I've spent too many years trying to understand what goes on under the hood of a web site and it's pages. GoLive seems to be more of a burden than a help!
Truly, if you know how to write good algorithms, understand css,PHP, javascript, and MySQL, and can organize your files into a folder structure that makes sense to you, why not do it that way?
I'm just saying...

Kinda lame, but maybe it's the software, not the book

I lost my copy of Dreamweaver software and happened to have a copy of Golive, so I figured I'd try to learn how to use it. I bought this book and went to town. I had a hard time following the instructions because it shows you one little section of the screen at a time and tells you to go there. Well, of course certain menus aren't always visible all the time, so if you don't see what you're looking for right away, you don't know what to click on to make that little section appear. So even with the illustrated manual, I still felt lost quite a bit.

Another drawback is that if you want to look up how to perform one little function, you can't do that.

I guess this book is good for learning how to build the sample site outlined in the book, but it's not great as a reference to use while trying to build your own site.

I finally gave up and bought another copy of Dreamweaver, which handles a lot better and is much more intuitive than GoLive. GoLive is lame.

This is the best manual, yet. Much better than previous versions. It is error free. I found that all the misakes I made in learning the tool placement were my poor eyesight and understanding. All examples are to the point and you are given excellent opportunity on how to do work on your own. Like in extra credit. This is an essential book in learning GoLive. Take your time, do a chapter at a time. I would not be without it.

Money, food, and fuel were scarce, and during bitter winters, three Calof households Abraham and Rachel with their growing children, along with his parents and a brother's family would pool resources and live together (with livestock) in one shanty. Under harsh and primitive conditions, Rachel Bella Calof bore and raised nine children. The family withstood many dangers, including hailstorms that hammered wheat to the ground and flooded their home; droughts that reduced crops to dust; blinding snowstorms of plains winters. Through it all, however, Calof drew on a humor and resolve that is everywhere apparent in her narrative. Always striving to improve her living conditions, she made lamps from dried mud, scraps of rag, and butter; plastered the cracked wood walls of her home with clay; supplemented meagre supplies with prairie forage wild mushrooms and garlic for a special supper, dry grass for a hot fire to bake bread. Never sentimental, Caolf's memoir is a vital historical and personal record. J. Sanford Rikoon elaborates on the history of Jewish settlement in the rural heartland and the great tide of immigration from the Russian Pale of Settlement and Eastern Europe from 1880ETH1910. Elizabeth Jameson examines how Calof Owrites from the interior spaces of private life, and from that vantage point, reconfigures more familiar versions of the American West. In 1894, the 18-year-old Calof, a Russian Jew, was shipped to the U.S. to marry an unknown man and stake a homesteading claim with him in North Dakota. She later set down her memories of that time in fluid prose that occasionally reveals a biting sense of humor. Although her circumstances were often pathetic, Calof never is. She writes matter-of-factly about her 12'x 14' dirt-floored shanty, her husband's unappealing family and their unsanitary living arrangements. Each winter, her husband Abe's parents and brother would join them in their home in order to save fuel?an arrangement revealed only on her wedding day. There are pleasurable moments here too, like an impromptu supper of wild garlic and mushrooms (Calof does a taste test to see whether they are poisonous?"It didn't burn or taste bad, so I swallowed it"). Childbearing is particularly difficult: Calof seems to be constantly pregnant, and her superstitious mother-in-law keeps her secluded after the birth of her first child until she begins to hallucinate about demons. An epilogue by Calof's son, Jacob, picks up the courageous author's story in St. Paul, Minn., in 1917, while an essay by J. Sanford Rikoon on the phenomenon of Jewish farm settlements provides fascinating background.

In 1894, 18-year-old Rachel Calof left a Russian shtetl to marry a man she had never seen and to begin a new life homesteading in North Dakota. Four decades later she wrote this memoir, which serves as a powerful and often inspirational tribute to the human spirit. The grinding monotony, drudgery, and deprivation of the first years on the prairie are recounted here in numbing detail; the filth, vermin, and constant threat of disease suck out any pretense of romance from her story. Yet, she and her family persevered and carved out an acceptable life for themselves; perhaps they did so because their previous circumstances in Russia were even worse. Calof is far from a polished writer, and her insistence on recording even trivial details can be tiresome. Yet, the strength of her will and the nobility of her struggle come shining through. Her story is a quintessential American story, and one that all of us can benefit from reading. Jay Freeman

True Grit

Excellent. A translation by the son of a Russian Jewish 18 y/o woman who contracted to marry a rooky pioneer and homestead on the North Dakota prairie. The winters were every bit as grueling as the first storms of 2016 and perhaps worse considering they were living in an overcrowded 12 x 14 ft shack ( a frame and no insulation ). It gives meaning to the phrase "true grit".

Rachel Calof's Story--amazing

I have an entire bookshelf and Kindle full of women homesteader's stories. Rachel arrived about 10 years before my relatives arrived, and because of our similar backgrounds, her story caught my attention immediately. I cannot believe what she and thousands of other women went through on the lonesome plains of America. Bad enough to have to try and raise a family on an isolated farm but she had to endure the constant presence of a fanatical mother-in-law and indifferent and often callous in-laws. I have nothing but admiration for this amazing woman.

Fascinating story

I read this in hopes of understanding more about my mother's childhood on a farm in Michigan between 1924 and 1940, and this book delivered. Rachel Calof was an earlier Jewish homesteader and North Dakota sounded positively brutal. The essays at the end of the book were very informative and helped me figure out how my grandfather (born in 1886), who was a tailor in Russia close to where Rachel Calof was born, chose to become a farmer around 1913.

A comprehensive critique of the aid system

Poverty seems to be a simple problem. Just add money and it goes away. Unfortunately that is not how it works. Aid has actually increased poverty, prevented the economic development of recipient countries and resulted in dependency and destruction of government agencies and accountable government, according to Jonathan Glennie in this book.

The author says that the impacts of aid are usually not measured, and when they are measured the measurements do not include the indirect impacts of aid, and in particular the negative effects of aid on the basic institutions needed for economic stability and effective government in recipient countries, and the macroeconomic effects of large inflows of foreign money. Trade and investment policies are far more important to Africa's long-term economic growth, but it is much easier to get rich countries to agree to send some charity than it is to get them to change their trade policies.

The author suggests that donors and recipients should aim to halve aid by 2020, while taking other measures to fill the financing gap and support poverty reduction. Firstly, he recommends plugging the leaks which cause more money to leave Africa each year in illicit capital flight, investment abroad, debt repayments and bolstering central bank foreign exchange reserves than the total amount of aid received. Next, African governments need to raise revenue through well-designed taxation systems. An appropriate mix of protectionism and trade liberalisation needs to be adopted to foster economic growth. Donor countries should be spending more on development in Africa, but through technology and investment, not aid.

The book is quite short at 143 pages, but filled with interesting facts and stories about problems with the aid system. Some might be tempted to give up on trying to help the poor after seeing all the problems, but that is not the author's intent; instead, he argues that we should be expending greater efforts and resources in helping the poor, not through more aid, but though something that works.

A new look at aid

I like this book. It crams a great deal of good sense into a short space. In particular the author understands how institutional failure and weakening of the indigenous executive and legislative process within African Governments can be actually caused by the existence of a large foreign aid sector and budgetary dependence on it. In other words Aid undermines the very Governance objectives it purports to address. The book is different - maybe paradigm-changing - in really focusing on this problem rather than on the extensively discussed and more minor issues like technical aid effectiveness. It is this perspective which lends credibility to the call for reducing aid. But oddly, ater all this insight, he ends up with a solutions chapter which seems to leave behind his central argument. His solutions are all about money per se, not institutions. For example recapturing reserves, preventing capital flight, reducing theft; lowering rich country subsidies, more DFI. These are all important but have been discussed ad mauseam elsewhere. Where is the strengthening of the institutional framework and how will it be developed indigenously?? By what societal mechanisms is such money likely be deployed to support genuine indigenous institutional development? These for me are the real questions for African independence and development.

About the Author

James Dunn�(Ph.D., Cambridge) was for many years the�Lightfoot Professor of Divinity�in the Department of Theology at the�University of Durham. Since his retirement he has been made Emeritus Lightfoot Professor. He is a leading�British�New Testament�scholar, broadly in the�Protestant�tradition. Dunn is especially associated with the�New Perspective on Paul, a phrase which he is credited with coining during his 1982 Manson Memorial Lecture.

A reference book for any serious student of the N.T.

Commentaries are written with a variety of audiences in mind. Some are pitched at a "popular" level; they are accessible to Christians who do not have a degree in theology (and they may not be very helpful, since they tend to rehearse familiar ideas). Some are a little meatier, intended to aid preachers in sermon preparation. And some are written at an academic level; they debate the positions of other scholars.
The Word Biblical Commentary series tries to address both of the latter two audiences. The commentaries provide assistance to scholars, preachers, and other serious students of the Bible.
Word imposes a rigid format. Authors must begin each passage with a bibliography, followed by a translation with notes on the Greek manuscripts. Next there is a "form and structure" section which discusses grammatical and thematic links with other passages and calls attention to the literary techniques employed by the biblical author. Next there is a "comment" section which is quite detailed, allowing some room for interaction with other scholars. Finally there is an "explanation" section, which summarizes the message of the text without repeating all the technical details.
Word's format inevitably introduces some repetition. For busy preachers, the trick is to zero in on the explanation section. Preachers will value the other sections of the commentary when there is a theological or textual problem which merits closer examination.
Dunn's commentary succeeds brilliantly at both levels. Dunn is a leading authority in Pauline studies. His "new perspective on Paul" builds on the work of E. P. Sanders and has attracted the attention of scholars including N. T. Wright. He is bound to have his academic audience in mind at points in a commentary on Romans.
But Dunn also put a great deal of thought into the explanation section of this work. He describes his approach in the author's preface. When he began to write, he concentrated on the explanation section of chapters 1-11 for two years. During that time, he restricted himself to only a few technical aids, in order to maintain a focus on the broad message of Romans rather than the technical details primarily of interest to scholars.
The result is a reference book that any serious student of the New Testament will find helpful. Many readers will read only the explanation section most of the time. But the Word commentaries are relatively inexpensive, so Dunn's two volumes on Romans are still good value for the money.

Excellent Commentary on Romans 1-8

I am a graduate of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (Master of Divinity with Biblical Languages). I preach at least twice a month, in addition to writing one paper per month. This is all in addition to my paying job as an Engineer. Because my time is at such a premium, I am always glad to try different commentaries on the Greek and Hebrew texts. Some of you may use a commentary differently than I do. For me, a commentary is my last stop before I write the sermon (or paper). First comes all my own reading and translating of the text. Then I compare my translation to the main English translations (NASB, NEV, NIV, KJV). After all that work, then comes time to read some commentaries.

This is the first volume of the WBC that I have ever tried. Therefore, I cannot speak for the series. This particular volume is very helpful. The author (James Dunn) does an outstanding job of listing all his references. He provides a survey of the opinions of a multitude of Bible scholars, before offering his own opinion. This is precisely how a commentator should write a commentary. Even though I do not agree with every conclusion that Dunn makes, I very much appreciate the amount of work which went into this volume.

For those of you are familiar with the EBC (Expositor's Bible Commentary), the WBC (Word Biblical Commentary) on Romans has more survey of what other writers have said and less analysis of the Greek words. Both commentaries are useful and both have their shortcomings. If you are a full-time preacher (or professor) and have time to read all the original source materials from commentator throughout the ages, this volume might not be for you. However, for the rest of us, this volume is a wonderful source of (a) seeing what other commentators have said (b) gaining a less linguistically analytical view of the Greek text and (c)being challenged to think about Dunn's comments.

Do I recommend this book? Yes, but only for those people who are going to go read Romans first, and then read this commentary.

This is a great commentary for students and those who have deeper study needs. Dunn is well-known and presents information to help the student understand the first part of Romans.
